Eagles Take on Penguins Before Heading West

The EMU Volleyball squad head to Youngstown State before traveling to Utah for the weekend

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University volleyball team is riding a six-match winning streak after falling in just their opening match to the Fighting Irish of the University of Notre Dame. Since then, the Eagles have dropped just three sets in their last six matches. EMU looks to continue their dominance as they head to Youngstown, Ohio on Tuesday, Sept. 6, to take on the Penguins in a 7 p.m. match. The following weekend the Green and White head west to Salt Lake City, Utah for the Utah Invitational. The Eagles open up the invite with the host Utes at 7 p.m., Friday, Sept. 9. EMU rounds out the week with a double-header on Saturday, Sept. 10, when they take on Brigham Young at 10 a.m., followed up by a 5 p.m. nightcap with the Highlanders of UC-Riverside.
ALL-TIME VERSUS THIS WEEK'S FIELD: The Eagles open up the week with Youngstown State University Sept. 6 in Youngstown, Ohio. EMU is 3-0 all-time against the Penguins as they square-off in their fourth match ever on Tuesday night. The Eagles and the University of Utah face-off for the third time on Friday when they meet in the Utah Invitational at 7 p.m., Sept. 9. The Green and White face Brigham Young for the second time on Saturday. In their first meeting, the Eagles fell to the Cougars 3-0 on Nov. 28, 2003. The Eagles have never met UC-Riverside on the court.
IAQUANIELLO NAMED IUPUI HAMPTON INN INVITATIONAL MVP: Junior, Rachel Iaquaniello was named to the named the 2011 IUPUI Hampton Inn Invitational Most Valuable Player on Sunday, Sept. 4, after the Eagles were named champions of the 2011 IUPUI Hampton Inn Invitational. The junior outside hitter led the Eagles offense in the championship game by pacing them with 23 kills. She also was stellar on defense in the big game by picking up 21 digs. Throughout the tournament she averaged five kills per set, while coming up with 2.78 digs per set defensively.
For her efforts in the second week of the season, Iaquaniello was named as the MAC West Division Offensive Player of the Week. It was the third time in her career she has received the honor, and the first time in the 2011 season.
Earlier this season, Iaquaniello was named to the Shamrock Invitational's All-Tournament team, and has been a standout throughout the 2011 campaign. Iaquaniello leads the Eagles in kills with 112 (4.67 k/s), and has played in 24 of EMU's 25 sets to this point in the season. She was a 2010 All-MAC first team member, and a 2009 All-MAC freshmen team member.
EAGLES HONORED IN INDIANAPOLIS: Sophomore Paige Roback and junior Kristen Baker were honored with their play in the 2011 IUPUI Hampton Inn Invitational as they were both named to the All-Tournament team. Roback saw time in all 10 sets the Eagles played in at the tournament and had 28 kills (2.8 k/s) in the invite. The sophomore maintained a .299 attacked percentage throughout the invitational, including a .385 attack percentage in the Eagles 3-0 win over Stetson University. This season, the Eagles' outside hitter is second on the team in kills with 60 and is averaging 2.40 kills per set.
Baker played in all 10 sets over the weekend and finished with 25 kills (2.5 k/s) in the tournament. The junior middle blocker was a force defensively coming up with 14 total blocks, including seven in the 3-0 win over Stetson University. Baker leads the Eagles this season with 26 total blocks, and has averaged 1.04 blocks per set in her junior campaign.
NEAR THE TOP OF THE MAC IN....: Rachel Iaquaniello is second in the Mid-American Conference kills per set with 4.67, trailing only Lauren Wicinski of Northern Illinois University with 5.15 kills per set.
Ashley Mason is fourth in the conference in assists per set at 10.91 assists per set this season.
As a team, the Eagles are second in the conference in digs, with 20.27 digs per set this season.
