Eagles Ice Penguins 3-1 in Seventh Straight Victory

EMU is riding a seven match win streak after topping Youngstown State

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University women's volleyball team extended their winning streak to seven straight matches on Tuesday, Sept. 6, when they traveled to Youngstown, Ohio and defeated the Penguins of Youngstown State in four sets (25-20, 25-16, 18-25, 25-20). This is the longest winning streak for the Green and White since the Eagles opened up the 2010 campaign with an 8-0 start.
Eastern improved their record to 7-1 on the season, while the Penguins fell to 0-8 on the year with the loss to the Eagles.
Juniors, Kristen Baker (Mentor, Ohio-Mentor) and Rachel Iaquaniello (Plymouth, Mich.-Dearborn Divine Child) paced the EMU offense as each had double-digit kills in the win. Baker was able to rack up 10 and managed a .556 attack percentage (10-0-18). Iaquaniello picked up a double-double, 14 kill and 10 digs. Sophomore, Paige Roback (Maumee, Ohio-Notre Dame Academy) chipped-in with eight kills, while Ashley Mason (Eastlake, Ohio-Lake Catholic) recorded a double-double of her own, 34 assists and a team-high 14 digs.
The Eagles jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead after they took the first set 25-20. Iaquaniello led the EMU offense with four kills, while Roback had three of her own. Baker was able to pick up three total blocks in the frame to help Eastern to an early lead.
EMU took a two-set lead after Baker's dominant performance in the second set. Baker recorded a .700 attack percentage (7-0-10) and led the Eagles to a 25-16 victory in the second frame. Baker was able to knock home over half of the Eagles kills in the set.
Eastern hit a speed bump in the third frame as the Penguins were able to top the Eagles 18-25. The Green and White had just five kills in the set, while Youngstown State countered with 18, including seven from Alexis Egler.
The Eagles rebounded in the final set of the match. Riding a .333 attack percentage (15-4-33) Eastern was able to shut the door on the Penguins netting a 25-20 win in the final frame.
EMU looks to continue their hot streak when they head west for the Utah Invitational in Salt Lake City, Utah. Eastern opens the invite with a match against the host Utes of the University of Utah, Friday, Sept. 9. The match is set to start at 7 p.m. on the Crimson Court.
