EAGLES HOPE TO SEE PLENTY OF RED VERSUS THE FALCONS: Do not be alarmed Saturday, Feb. 12, if you see Eastern Michigan University student-athletes and staff departing from their green and white colors, in favor of red. It is the University's way of supporting heart disease prevention for women as part of the American Heart Association's Go Red for Women Day, which was held Friday, Feb. 4.
To help with the cause the EMU Department of Athletics will be holding a “Green Goes Red” basketball doubleheader at the Convocation Center. The women's basketball team hosts Mid-American Conference foe Bowling Green State University at 2 p.m., followed by the men's game against the University at Buffalo at 4:30 p.m.
All fans wearing a red shirt will be admitted free to the game to help cheer on the Eagles. Additionally, the American Heart Association will be providing heart-healthy information, as well as distributing 100 get healthy cookbooks prior to the women's game.
SETTING THE SCENE: Eastern Michigan enters the game with a 16-8 (7-3 MAC) mark after being tripped up at home by Buffalo, 70-68, Feb. 5. Meanwhile, Bowling Green is riding a two-game winning streak over Northern Illinois and Ball State that has pushed its record to 19-4 (7-3 MAC).
THE ALL-TIME SERIES: The Feb. 12 contest marks the 58th meeting between the Bowling Green Falcons and Eastern Michigan Eagles, who first met during the 1976-1977 season. BGSU has dominated the all-time series, 43-14, including winning the last seven meetings between the two schools. Last season, the Falcons captured an 83-71 victory at venerable Anderson Arena in Bowling Green, Ohio, Jan. 23, 2010.
MAC TITANS AT IT AGAIN: When the Eagles and Falcons have tangled over the past eight seasons, it has almost been a guarantee that one of the teams (if not both) will be on top of the MAC standings. Saturday's game extends a streak of 11 consecutive meetings featuring the league's divisional leader. The last time neither side was in first place was Jan. 27, 2004. Ironically, EMU and BGSU would next square off in the MAC Tournament title game, March 13, with the Eagles advancing to the NCAA Tournament with a 65-56 victory.
BGSU has been in first place in 10 of those games with EMU holding down the divisional lead in four contests. Additionally, both teams have been first in their respective divisions three times (2006, 2008 and 2010).
OFFENSIVE WEEK FOR SCHROCK LEADS TO ANOTHER PLAYER OF THE WEEK HONOR: Senior Cassie Schrock had one of the best offensive weeks of her career, totaling 59 points on 22-of-44 shooting in a pair of games versus Kent State, Feb. 2, and Buffalo, Feb. 5. For her efforts, she was named the Mid-American Conference Women's Basketball West Division Player of the Week, the conference office announced Feb. 7. It marks the third time she has won the award in her career.
For the week, she averaged 29.5 points, 7.0 rebounds, 4.5 assists and 1.5 steals in 39.5 minutes per game. Against the Golden Flashes, Schrock totaled a career-high 30 points on 10-of-19 shooting to go along with a 9-for-15 performance from the free-throw line. Then against the Bulls, the Wadsworth, Ohio native dropped a career-high 12 field goals in 25 attempts for 29 points.
GET THAT SHOT OUTTA HERE: Junior forward Paige Redditt recorded a blocked shot Saturday, Feb. 5, in the setback to Buffalo. She upped her career total to 74 and currently stands tied for third place on the EMU all-time list with Melis Ulker (2002-06). Redditt needs 29 more rejections to pass Stephanie Smiley for second all-time. Smiley tallied 103 rejections for Eastern from 1998-2002.
LAURIE BYRD'S NO. 4 JERSEY HANGS IN THE RAFTERS: EMU retired the No. 4 jersey of former women's basketball great Laurie Byrd during a halftime ceremony with Byrd in attendance at the Feb. 5 basketball game against the University at Buffalo.
Byrd, who is the program's all-time leading scorer with 1,899 career points, became the first EMU women's basketball player to have her jersey hung in the Convocation Center rafters. She joined EMU men's basketball greats George Gervin, Grant Long and Kennedy McIntosh as the only other players to have the honor bestowed upon them.
A prolific scorer while at EMU from 1978-1982, Byrd has remained the program's all-time leading scorer for 29 seasons. She is the only player in the program's history to lead her team in scoring and assists in each season in which she competed. Additionally, Byrd still holds EMU career records for scoring average (19.2 ppg), field goals made (854) and field goals attempted (1,788).
Currently, an assistant coach for the WNBA's Washington Mystics, Byrd previously served as an assistant coach with the Houston Comets in 2008 and the New York Liberty in 2009 and 2010. In the 2007 season, she was the Comets' director of player personnel. Prior to heading to Houston, Byrd served as an assistant coach for three seasons (2003-2005) with the Detroit Shock, which included the 2003 WNBA Championship.
SCHROCK NETS CAREER HIGH AS EMU SNAPS KSU'S 15-GAME HOME WINNING STREAK: Behind a career-high 30 points from senior Cassie Schrock, Eastern Michigan snapped Kent State's 15-game home winning streak with a 75-66 victory, Feb. 2, at the Memorial Athletic and Convocation Center. The Golden Flashes' streak was the 13th-longest home winning streak in the country, and it also marked just the second time in 15 games between the Flashes and Eagles that EMU had claimed a road victory.
