YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) — The Eastern Michigan University women's basketball team battled all day with Mid-American Conference East Division leader Bowling Green, but in the end the visitors held on for a 60-55 victory here Saturday, Feb. 12, in the Convocation Center.
Eastern held a 31-24 halftime lead before Bowling Green rallied to tie the game late in the second half. With the lead bouncing back and forth, BGSU's Lauren Prochaska, the game's leader scorer with 37 points, hit a huge three with 3:20 left in the game.
The two teams traded baskets the rest of the way and the Falcons would hold on for the five point win.
The Eagles, now 16-9 overall and 7-4 in MAC play, had three players in double figures, with Sydney Huntley scored 20, Tavelyn James 15 and Paige Redditt 11.
Bowling Green, now 20-4 overall and 8-3 in MAC action, was led by Prochaska's 37 points and 12 rebounds.
EMU shot just 33.3 percent from the field, making 21-of-63 shots and just 3-of-14 three-point attempts for 21.4 percent. The Eagles were just 10-of-18 from the free throw line for 55.6 percent.
BG would also have its own shooting woes, making just 18-of-55 shots from the field for 32.7 percent, but the Falcons would make up for it at the free throw line, making 19-of-25 attempts for 76.0 percent.
At the 7:56 mark of the opening half, junior forward Paige Redditt registered her 75th-career block to move her past former center Melis Ulker (2002-06) into sole possession of third place on the EMU all-time list in that category. Redditt finished the game with two blocks.
The Eagles looked to gain an edge by shooting early and often, but came up empty on their first five attempts. Likewise, the Falcons failed to connect on their first three shots until Maggie Hennegan registered the first field goal of the game at 16:35. On the ensuing possession, Tavelyn James filled a three-pointer to put the Eagles ahead, 4-3.
James and Redditt proved to be the key playmakers over the next five minutes as the duo combined for all 11 EMU points to give the home team a five-point advantage with 12:25 to play. Following a Bowling Green timeout, Sydney Huntley tallied a fast break layup for a 13-6 EMU lead.
Prochaska ended the first half with a pair of free throws to pull the Falcons back to within seven, 31-24. The senior guard accounted for 17 of Bowling Green's 24 points with a 5-of-11 effort from the floor and 5-of-5 from the charity stripe to lead all scorers. She also hauled in nine boards to lead in that category.
James paced the EMU offense after 20 minutes with a 3-of-5 performance from beyond the arc and 3-of-4 from the line for 12 points. Huntley was 5-of-12 for 10 points and Schrock led EMU rebounders with six boards.
The Flacons controlled the action to begin the second half, but connected on just one of four shots. In fact, points were difficult to come by for either team with a combined four points scored after five minutes.
Prochaska then turned the tables in the Falcons' favor and almost single-handedly gave the visitors a 38-37 edge with 10:11 to play. The go-ahead layup put her at 26 points for the game and capped-off a 14-4 run for the Falcons.
Eastern Michigan was having trouble working the ball in low—an area in which they previously experienced success. Seven second half EMU turnovers to that point also played a major part in negating any consistent offensive threat. A defensive blow for the EMU defense occurred at the 8:18 mark, when Redditt was briefly taken out of the contest after committing her fourth foul.
As time ticked off the clock, the pace picked up on both ends of the court as the lead switched hands several times. Huntley tallied her 20th point of the afternoon with a long jumper at 4:24 to give EMU a 48-47 lead.
With the score knotted at 52, Schrock and Redditt kept the ball in EMU possession with timely offensive rebounding. However, the Eagles failed to translate that into points as a turnover ultimately put the ball in the hands of Prochaska, who notched her fifth three-pointer of the afternoon to give Bowling Green a 55-52 lead with 1:42 remaining.
Down four points with 13 seconds left, Redditt filled a layup and missed the and-one to make the score 56-54 for BGSU. The Eagles would get no closer as the Falcons came away with a 60-55 win.
The Eagles will now hit the road for a Wednesday, Feb. 16, matchup with the Ball State University Cardinals in Muncie, Ind. Tip-off is slated for 7 p.m.
