YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com -- The Eastern Michigan University women's basketball team fell just short of a sixth consecutive victory here Saturday afternoon, Feb. 5, at the Convocation Center, as the University at Buffalo Bulls came away with a slim 70-68 victory in a Mid-American Conference cross-divisional game.
The Eagles overcame a 16-point second half deficit to take the lead with under a minute to play, but a late UB bucket sealed the game for the visitors. Eastern had two shots in the last few seconds, but both fell short.
The Eagles (16-8; 7-3 MAC) dropped their first game to the Bulls (12-10; 5-4 MAC) in the last 10 meetings. Cassie Schrock led all scorers in the contest with 29 points including a 12-of-25 performance from the floor and 5-of-8 from the line. Schrock's 29 points was good for the second-highest total of her career eclipsed only by effort Feb. 2, when she dropped in an even 30 points in a 75-66 win at Kent State University.
Eastern Michigan shot 27-of-63 (42.9 percent) from the floor including a robust 48 points in the paint. Sydney Huntley accounted for all three of the Eagles' three-pointers, as she shot 6-of-14 overall and 3-of-4 from beyond the arc for 18 points.
Kourtney Brown earned a double-double with 26 points and 13 rebounds to lead the Bulls in both categories. In addition, Brittany Henderson tallied 17 points with Nicki Hopkins adding 12. The Bulls out-rebounded EMU 45-39 for the contest.
Prior to the start of the contest, the Eagles celebrated its 2009-10 Women's National Invitational Tournament (WNIT) appearance with the unveiling of a banner commemorating the team's third trip to the annual event. During a halftime presentation, women's basketball legend Laurie Byrd was honored with the retiring of her No. 4 jersey. Byrd donned the Green and White from 1978-82.
Buffalo took early command in the contest with a mini 5-0 run. That deficit was quickly erased as sloppy ball handling by Buffalo and accurate shooting from the Eagles' starting five contributed to tie the score at 8-8 with 15:09 remaining in the opening half.
A relatively low-scoring affair continued with the Eagles holding a one-point advantage, 13-12, with 9:37 to play. After a key defensive stop for the home team, Eastern Michigan got the rebound it was looking for and immediately cashed-in offensively with a fast-break three-pointer from Huntley.
On the next offensive rush, Schrock filled a layup and was fouled by Jessica Fortman. Schrock converted the free throw for her 10th point of the game as the Eagles found themselves ahead, 19-12, with 9:13 on the clock.
The Eagles' lead increased to eight, 20-12, but was short-lived as eight straight points including three-pointers from Ashley Zuber and Hopkins tied the contest at 20 apiece with 4:33 remaining. Hopkins earned her team a five-point edge, 26-21, with her second and third three-balls of the afternoon with 2:22 to play.
To that point, the Bulls tallied 14 of those 26 points off EMU turnovers, which totaled 13 after 17 minutes of play.
Schrock remained hot through the closing minutes of the first half to keep the EMU deficit at five, 30-25, at halftime. The senior guard led all scorers at the break with a 5-of-9 effort from the field and 5-of-7 from the charity stripe for 17 points. Huntley chipped-in seven points, shooting 2-of-5 overall, 1-of-1 from three-point land and 2-of-2 from the line.
Hopkins' trio of long balls (3-of-4) earned her nine points to pace the UB offense. Kourtney Brown brought down six rebounds during the first half to lead all players in that category.
As a team, the Eagles shot 8-of-24 from the field (33.3 percent) but converted on 8-of-11 free throws (72.7 percent). EMU hauled-in 20 rebounds and committed 14 turnovers. The Bulls shot 12-of-38 overall (31.6 percent) and 4-of-12 (33.3 percent) from beyond the arc while allowing 11 turnovers.
Buffalo began the second half firing on all cylinders as a 13-6 run through the opening three minutes put them ahead by 12 points, 43-31. Seven of those points came from Brown, who had 13 to that point (6-of-11).
The middle portion of the half featured back-and-forth action with both teams trading buckets. The Green and White continued to receive consistent scoring from Schrock, but was unable to solve Buffalo's size advantage under the hoop as Bulls out-rebounded the Eagles, 40-28, at the 8:40 mark of the half.
After the EMU deficit grew to 16, the Eagles flexed their offensive muscle by rattling-off an 18-4 run to pull within striking distance, 62-60, with 3:45 showing on the game clock. The impressive scoring surge was led by six-point efforts from both Schrock and Tavelyn James.
With the crowd sensing a comeback, Huntley drained a three-pointer before James delivered a go-ahead fast break layup with 48 seconds left to put the Eagles ahead, 68-67. Brown then turned the tables with a layup to lift UB back on top.
A jump ball with 18 seconds remaining gave the Eagles possession and a chance to regain a slim edge. A three-point attempt from the left side by James bounced off the rim and into the hands of the defense, which forced the Eagles to foul. One final rush after the foul came up empty as the Bulls escaped with a 70-68 upset.
The Eagles will now enjoy a week-long break before their Saturday, Feb. 12, home matchup with the East Division leading Bowling Green State University Falcons. Tip-off is slated for 2:07 p.m.
