IT ALL COMES DOWN TO THIS: With 15 Mid-American Conference games played, it all boils down to Wednesday's, March 2, regular-season finale for the Eastern Michigan University women's basketball team. Instate rival Western Michigan University invades the Convocation Center for a 7:07 p.m. contest.
Coming off a heart-breaking 68-67 setback at Central Michigan University, Feb. 26, the Eagles enter the game with a mark of 18-11 (9-6 MAC) and a chance to still pick up a first-round bye in the upcoming MAC Tournament, March 5-12, if Kent State University loses at the University of Akron, March 2. Meanwhile, WMU is 9-19 (5-10 MAC) and has won its last two games to move into sole possession of fourth place in the MAC's West Division.
THE ALL-TIME SERIES: The March 2 contest marks the 69th meeting between the Western Michigan Broncos and Eastern Michigan Eagles, who first played during the 1976-77 season. EMU leads the all-time series, 38-30, and has won 10 of the last 12 meetings.
Eastern picked up a 67-56 victory in the first meeting with Western, Jan. 19, at University Arena. The Eagles' offensive attack was paced by a 23-point performance by Tavelyn James. Senior Cassie Schrock added 20 points and seven rebounds with six steals, while De'Ja Wills chipped in shooting three-of-five from beyond the arc for nine points.
A LOOK AT THE MAC TOURNAMENT SEEDS: If the regular season ended today, EMU would earn the fifth seed in the field and find itself pitted with the 12th-seeded RedHawks of Miami University in a first-round contest, Saturday, March 5, here in Ypsilanti. Per the final regular-season conference standings, the top four seeds will automatically advance to the quarterfinal round, with seeds 5-12 battling it out on campus sites in first round action to fill-out the remaining four quarterfinal spots.
Toledo earned the top seed, while No. 2 Bowling Green, No. 3 Central Michigan and No. 4 Kent State would also earn byes and go directly to Cleveland's Quicken Loans Arena. Buffalo would be the sixth seed hosting No. 11 Ohio, No. 7 Akron would tangle with No. 10 Ball State and No. 8 Northern Illinois would play No. 9 Western Michigan.
SENIOR SNAPSHOTS: On Wednesday, March 2, the EMU women's basketball program honors six seniors who have helped transform the Eagles into one of the top teams in the Mid-American Conference. During their tenure at EMU, the team has posted 65 victories, a MAC West Division title, a WNIT appearance and the biggest single-season turnaround in school history.
Raina Spencer - A transfer from Fordam University, this senior played 33 games in her two years in Ypsilanti, racking up 112 career points and 44 career rebounds. Her best game as an Eagle occurred last season at Chicago State, when she scored 17 points off the bench en route to earning MAC West Division Player of the Week honors. Earlier this season, she was instrumental in the victory over Temple University, tallying eight points, three rebounds and two steals. She was lost for the rest of the season following an knee injury in practice during late December.
Tara Johnson - Having played in 102 career games for the Green and White, she has been the ultimate team player, providing energy and defense off the bench. In 2008, she scored a personal-best 10 points and grabbed 11 rebounds for a double-double in the setback to nationally-ranked Texas Christian. Then this season she came up big against No. 7 Ohio State, posting eight points and six rebounds off the bench.
Sydney Huntley - A lightning quick guard, she has averaged 10 points per game throughout her career, including making 115 three-pointers, which ranks as the eighth most in EMU history. Also known for her tenacious defense, she has grabbed 170 steals to rank 10th all-time in that category. Currently ranked 44th in the nation in swipes, she scored a school-record 36 off the bench in a record-setting contest at Central Michigan.
De'Ja Wills - Having played in 83 career games for EMU, she has been known for her three-point shooting ability while donning the Green and White uniform. Her 35.1 percent clip from long distance ranks ninth-best in school history and she is just three triples shy of 100 for her career.
Cassie Schrock - She has earned four letters and numerous mentions in the EMU record book, including recording the third triple-double in school history. She is the only player in the MAC to currently rank in the top 10 in the league in scoring, rebounding and assists. An honorable mention All-MAC honoree as a sophomore, she is just the third player in EMU women's basketball history with more than 1,000 points, 600 rebounds, 300 assists and 175 steals in their career.
Kristin Thomas - A transfer from Hillsborough Community College, this senior has played in 60 games in her two years, racking up 386 career rebounds and 75 career blocks. She has at least six caroms in 18 games this season, including four double-figure rebounding performances. One of the toughest players to put on the EMU uniform, she notched a double-double with 10 points and 13 rebounds in a narrow setback at Toledo in 2009-10.
ONE-POINT HEARTBREAK: The Eagles were on the wrong side of late game heroics last week, as they suffered one-point setbacks to Toledo, Feb. 23, and Central Michigan, Feb. 26. It marked the fourth-time during the 2010-11 season that Eastern Michigan had been burnt on the opponent's final possession with Detroit, Dec. 8, and Buffalo, Feb. 5, coming up with scores to send the Eagles home shaking their collective heads.
The back-to-back one-point defeats mark just the second occurrence in the program's 35-year history. The then-Hurons dropped a 69-70 contest to Northern Illinois (Feb. 20, 1981) and followed it up with a 74-75 defeat at Kent State (Feb. 21, 1981). Games that have been decided by just a point have been very problematic for Eastern Michigan with the squad holding a 7-15 record all-time.
THREE POSTSEASON OPPORTUNITIES AWAIT: Should the Eagles fail to secure the MAC's automatic NCAA Tournament bid or a berth in the Women's NIT, there is now a third option for postseason play with the second-annual Women's Basketball Invitational (WBI). The WBI is a 16-team, single elimination tournament divided into two regions with eight seeded teams in each.
The event is being run by Sport Tours International, Inc. and will take place over two weeks with all games being played on campus sites. The first round matchups will take place March 16-17, with the championship game tentatively scheduled for March 26 or 27.
Also, in 2010-11 the Women's National Invitation Tournament (WNIT) remains at a 64-team field. The Postseason WNIT will celebrate its 14th year with the 2011 event. The tournament will continue to feature an automatic berth for each of the nation's 31 established conferences, in addition to now offering at-large berths to 33 teams.
The 2011 Postseason WNIT will feature 32 first-round games, followed by 16 second-round games, eight third-round games, four quarterfinal games, two semifinal games, and the championship. All games in the single-elimination format are played at a host facility of participating schools. Games may begin Wednesday, March 16. The championship game will be played Saturday, April 2, with national television coverage of the contest.
