YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) — The Eastern Michigan University women's basketball team closed out the 2010-11 regular season with a decisive 80-56 win over Western Michigan University here Wednesday evening, March 2, 2011, in a Mid-American Conference West Division game.

The Eagles entered the game needing a win over the Broncos and an Akron victory over Kent State to gain a bye in the first round of the upcoming Mid-American Conference Tournament, March 5-12, at Quicken Loans Arena in Cleveland, Ohio.

The Eagles did their part in beating WMU, but Kent State came back to win on the road at Akron tonight, making EMU the fifth seed. The Eagles will now host a first-round matchup with 12-seeded Miami University here in the Convocation Center Saturday, March 5, at 4:30 p.m. following the EMU men's basketball game against Toledo which is scheduled for a 2 p.m. tip.

The Eagles, now 19-11 overall and 10-6 in MAC action, had four players in double figures, led by senior guard Sydney Huntley (Cincinnati, Ohio-Purcell Marian) with 17, guard Tavelyn James (Detroit, Mich.-Mumford) and junior Paige Redditt (Kansas City, Mo.-Belton) adding 16 each with senior Cassie Schrock (Wadsworth, Ohio-Wadsworth) scoring 13.

Western, 9-20 overall and 5-11 in league play, was led by Miame Giden with 19 points.

Eastern blistered the nets for 51.6 percent from the field, hitting 32-of-62 shots while holding Western to 35.5 percent, making 22-of-62 attempts. EMU held a slim 40-36 edge on the boards.

Schrock started the game with a long three-point field goal but Western answered right away with a three from Manley.

Western would built up a 21-17 lead in the early going before the Eagles cranked up the offense with 13 unanswered points for a 30-21 advantage at the 4:02 mark.

The visitors would close it two nine points twice in the final several minutes, but the Eagles managed to boost the margin to 11, 40-29, at intermission.

Huntley and James led the Eagles in the first 20 minutes with 11 and 10 points respectively with the team shooting 50 percent from the field, hitting 15-of-30 shots. Western would make just 13-of-33 attempts for 39.4 percent.

The Eagles opened the second half by out-scoring the Broncos, 5-2, in the first 2:40 to post a 45-32 lead with 17:20 left.

Western would go on a mini-run to cut it nine, 45-36, at the 15:14 mark, but the Eagles would have a response, out-scoring the visitors 13-2 over the next three minutes to forge a 20-point lead, 58-38, at the 12:09 mark.

The Eagles would keep the offense rolling the rest of the game keeping the lead in high double digits over the final nine minutes and would go on to post the 24-point win, 80-56.
