THE ROAD TO A CHAMPIONSHIP BEGINS SATURDAY: The Eastern Michigan University women's basketball team begins its post-season run Saturday, March 5, by hosting Miami University in the opening round of the 2011 Mid-American Conference Women's Basketball Tournament. Game time is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. inside the Convocation Center. The game is the second leg of a doubleheader with the EMU men's basketball team, which tangles with the University of Toledo at 2 p.m.
The Eagles, seeded fifth in the tournament, defeated the No. 12-seed RedHawks in their only previous meeting this season, 72-62, Jan. 29, in Oxford, Ohio.
Coming off an 80-56 victory against Western Michigan University, March 2, the Eagles enter the game with a mark of 19-11 (10-6 MAC) and a 10-6 record this season inside the friendly confines of the Convocation Center. Meanwhile, Miami is 11-8 (3-13 MAC) having lost 11 of its last 12 games dating back to a Jan. 23 setback at Northern Illinois University.
The winner advances to play No. 4 Kent State University Wednesday, March 9, at Quicken Loans Arena in Cleveland, Ohio. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.

THE ALL-TIME SERIES: The March 5 contest marks the 50th meeting between the Miami RedHawks and Eastern Michigan Eagles, who first met during the 1979-80 season. Miami has dominated the all-time series, 36-13, but the Eagles posted a 72-62 victory in the lone meeting this season at Millett Hall in Oxford, Ohio, Jan. 29. That contest was filled with runs, as the RedHawks used a 16-2 run midway through the second period to slice the EMU advantage to just two points, 56-54, with 6:43 to play. However, the Eagles answered with a 16-8 run of their own to close the game and secure the 10-point victory.
Tavelyn James turned in a game-best 24 points on 8-of-20 shooting, including a pair of clutch free throws with 47 seconds to play to help ice the win. Cassie Schrock turned in her usual yeoman performance with 18 points, seven rebounds and five assists in 40 minutes of action. Junior Paige Redditt finished with 10 points and Desyree Thomas added a career-best six steals for the stingy Eagle defense.
Kirsten Olowinski posted a double-double with 10 points and a game-high 17 rebounds, while Maggie Boyer paced the RedHawks with 19 points and Courtney Osborn tallied 16 points and six rebounds.

NOW THIS IS MARCH MADNESS: The Green and White have posted a 19-17 record during the month of March over the last 12 years, including a 1-0 mark this season. Eastern is 13-16 all-time in 17 previous trips to the MAC Tournament. The 1999-2000 campaign marked the first season that all teams qualified for the tournament.

ALL-TIME AGAINST TEAMS IN THE TOURNAMENT: The Eagles sport a 13-16 mark in 17 trips to the conference postseason and are making their fourth under Head Coach AnnMarie Gilbert. The Eagles have faced Bowling Green (2-4) the most times of any squad in the tournament. Eastern is 2-2 versus Ohio, 2-1 against Toledo, 1-2 versus Miami and 0-3 versus Kent State. Eastern is 1-1 in postseason play versus Ball State and Northern Illinois. The Green and White are 2-0 against Buffalo and winless in only one attempt against Akron and Western Michigan. EMU was 2-0 versus Marshall in tournament play before the Thundering Herd departed for Conference USA.

MAC TOURNAMENT SEEDING FACTS: In the 27 years of the tournament, the top seed has won the title 20 times. Miami, a No. 4 seed in 1995, Western Michigan (No. 4 in 2003) and Bowling Green (No. 4 in 2004), became the highest seeds to ever advance to the title game. Western Michigan, a No. 4 seed in 2003, is the highest seed to ever win the title. The No. 1 and No. 2 seeds have met 15 times in the championship game, with the top seed winning 13 times.

THE LAST POSTSEASON MEETING WITH MIAMI: Despite 31 points from Tavelyn James, Eastern Michigan could not manage to hold off Miami down the stretch, as the Eagles fell, 75-69, to the RedHawks in the opening round of the 2009 Kraft Mid-American Conference Tournament at Quicken Loans Arena in Cleveland, March 11, 2009.
James tallied 31 points on 12-for-24 shooting from the field in the loss, including a 4-for-7 mark from beyond the arc. Miami's Jenna Schone finished just behind James, scoring 30 points on 10-for-16 shooting, including a 6-for-9 mark from beyond the arc.
The Eagles were up by as many as 16 points with 11:39 remaining in the game, but the RedHawks managed to pull within four points with less than four minutes remaining, as a jumper by Stephanie Ford limited EMU to a 67-63 lead. Schone pulled Miami within two with fewer than three minutes remaining, as her layup made it a 67-65 game and forced EMU Head Coach AnnMarie Gilbert to call a timeout.
After the timeout, the RedHawks closed the game on a 10-2 run, as EMU could not find an answer for Schone down the stretch, as she scored 10 points in the final three minutes to help Miami move on in the tournament and end EMU's season.

AMONG THE MAC's BEST: Tavelyn James became just the 20th player in Mid-American Conference history, and the second Eastern Michigan player, to cross the 200 career three-pointers mark with a pair of treys against Western Michigan, March 2.
