PINK IS THE NEW GREEN SATURDAY AT THE CONVO: In association with the Kay Yow Fund's Pink Zone and its continuing mission of raising awareness and funds for breast cancer research and treatment, the Eastern Michigan University women's basketball team will hold a Pink Zone game Saturday, Feb. 19, when the Eagles welcome Mid-American Conference West Division foe Northern Illinois University to the Convocation Center. Tip off is scheduled for 2:07 p.m. The game is the first part of a doubleheader with the EMU men's basketball team, which tangles with Jacksonville State University 30 minutes following the conclusion of the EMU-NIU contest.
The Eagles enter the game with a mark of 17-9 (8-4 MAC), tied for second place in the MAC's West Division with Central Michigan. Meanwhile, the Huskies are 11-14 (5-7 MAC) and currently projected to be the eighth seed in the upcoming MAC Tournament.
THE ALL-TIME SERIES: The Feb. 19 contest marks the 35th meeting between the Huskies and Eagles, who first played during the 1981-82 season. Eastern leads the overall series, 25-9, and has won 21 of the last 25 games over the Cardinal and Black. Head Coach AnnMarie Gilbert has tallied a 6-1 mark against NIU since taking over the program in 2007-08.
ABOUT THE PINK ZONE CAUSE: EMU is proud to support the Kay Yow Fund's Pink Zone initiative which is a global, unified effort for the organization's nation of coaches to assist in raising breast cancer awareness on the court, across campuses, in communities and beyond. Overall, the Pink Zone has raised nearly $3.3 million, has reached almost 2.7 million fans, and has unified over 4,700 participants in only four years. More than 1,800 schools nationwide have joined the fight against breast cancer with Pink Zone activities, Feb. 11-20. All fans are encouraged to wear pink on Saturday, and those that do will be admitted to the game free of charge.
FAMILIAR FACE: The Eagles' meeting with the Huskies Saturday will bring a familiar face back to the Convocation Center. Currently a sophomore forward for NIU, Kim Davis played the 2008-09 season at EMU as a walk-on, where she started 10 games and played in 24. A resident of Evanston, Ill., Davis left EMU to attend NIU, an in-state institution with lower tuition. She did not play basketball in 2009-10. NIU Head Coach Kathi Bennett discovered Davis and convinced her to join the Huskies.
FORMER HOOPSTER JOINS THE E-CLUB HALL OF FAME: It will be a big day for athletic events on the Eastern Michigan University campus Saturday, Feb. 19. Prior to the games the 35th EMU Athletic Hall of Fame ceremony will be held in the EMU Student Center beginning at 10 a.m. The seven new Hall of Fame Inductees will also be honored between the women's and men's basketball games.
The Class of 2010 includes: Clement Chukwu (track), Dawn (Godfrey) Heck (softball), Laurie Hubbard (women's swimming), JoAnn (LeFevre) McBroom (women's basketball), Hildred Lewis (football and men's track), John Martin (baseball), and Barry Stokes (football).
McBroom was a first-team All-MAC selection for the EMU women's basketball team in 1986-87 and finished her career as the fifth-leading scorer in EMU women's basketball history.
ROAD WARRIORS: The Eagles are a perfect 6-0 in MAC road contests this season, and have won 11 of their last 14 conference away games dating back to the 2009-10 campaign. Eastern Michigan has posted decisive victories away from the Convocation Center, winning by an averaged of nearly 10 points (EMU 71.7, OPP 61.8) with its closest triumph being just five, 56-51, at Akron, Jan. 22.
RECORD RALLY: Things looked bleak in the opening half, as the Eagles trailed by as many as 15 points, 38-23, when Ball State's Ebony Jackson connected on a three-pointer with 5:15 to go in the period at Worthen Arena, Feb. 16. However, the Eagles' defense would step up allowing the squad to go on a 25-9 run to give EMU a 48-47 edge and its first lead since the opening basket of the game.
EMU would take the contest by a score of 81-73, marking the team's largest deficit overcome in a win this season. Previously, the Eagles' widest margin overcome en route to a victory was six at Kent State, Feb. 2.
SCHROCK'S NEAR TRIPLE-DOUBLE POWERS EMU PAST BALL STATE: Behind a near triple-double by senior Cassie Schrock, the Eagles rolled to an 81-73 victory over Ball State, Feb. 16, at Worthen Arena. Schrock turned in the best game of her career, collecting a personal-best 38 points to go along with eight rebounds and nine assists.
JAMES PASSES 1,500 POINTS: With her 14-point effort at Ball State, Tavelyn James became just the fourth Eagle to pass 1,500 points in their career. James has 1,508 points joining Laurie Byrd (1,899), Ryan Coleman (1,793) and Nikki Knapp (1,511) in the exclusive club.
THE BROADCAST: The game will be broadcast on WEMU 89.1 FM, Chad Bush will have the play-by-play. Live internet video streaming of the game is available on Eagle All-Access, a subscription service through EMUEagles.com. Live internet audio is available for free on WEMU.org.
ON THE HORIZON: Things do not get any easier for EMU on Wednesday, Feb. 23, as the Eagles travel to MAC West leader Toledo. Wednesday's contest marks the 63rd meeting between Toledo and Eastern Michigan, who first met during the 1977-1978 season. The Rockets lead the overall series, 39-23.
Despite being the Eagles' closest conference opponent at just 49 miles, the Toledo Rockets have dominated the all-time series with a 22-8 record in Savage Arena. Of late though, that luck has begun to change, with EMU winning three of the last five dating back to the 2005-06 campaign.
