YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) — The Eastern Michigan University women's basketball team showcased stellar defense this afternoon, Feb. 19, holding the Northern Illinois Huskies to just 35 points as the Eagles coasted to a 62-35 victory in a Mid-American Conference West Division matchup here at the Convocation Center.

With the win, the Eagles improve to 18-9 on the year (9-4 MAC) and the Huskies drop to 11-15 overall (5-8 MAC).

EMU forced 28 NIU turnovers and held the Huskies to just 20 percent (12-of-60) from the floor. The 35-point NIU effort was the second-fewest points earned by a MAC team versus EMU during the 2010-11 season and also marks the lowest point total for an EMU opponent since the Eagles' 89-34 win over Niagara University, Dec. 28, 2010.

Cassie Schrock (Wadsworth, Ohio-Wadsworth) led the Eagles, connecting on 5-of-15 shots for a 19-point performance. The senior also hit a perfect 8-of-8 from the free throw line while snagging five boards and dishing out four assists for the Green and White. Sydney Huntley (Cincinnati, Ohio-Purcell Marian) contributed 12 points, while Tavelyn James (Detroit, Mich.-Mumford) recorded 11 with two steals and four rebounds. Paige Redditt (Kansas City, Mo.-Belton) was impressive defensively, grabbing seven boards to compliment her two blocks and three steals while taking four charges for EMU.

NIU's Kim Davis recorded a double-double with 11 points and 13 rebounds to lead the Huskies, while Brittney Callahan chipped in with 10 points and four boards.

EMU kept the Huskies scoreless through the first 7:12 of the contest while surging to seven unanswered points. The Eagles struck in the opening minutes when Schrock sliced a pass between two NIU defenders to Redditt in the low post, for a 2-0 lead.

James would increase the advantage to four after robbing an NIU defensive board and converting for two on the easy lay-in. Both teams remained idle offensively until the 15:45 mark when Redditt's successful connection from the charity stripe pushed the score to 5-0. A steal and fast break bucket by Huntley increased the EMU lead to seven through the first five minutes of play.

Ebony Ellis finally put the Huskies on the board at 12:48 for two of her four points on the afternoon. The Huskies would not reach double-digits until just over 17 minutes into the game after a Davis free throw, but the Eagles would still hold on to a dominant 26-10 lead.

Despite shooting just 25 percent (8-of-32) in the first 20 minutes of the contest, the Eagles headed into the locker room at the half holding a 29-12 lead over the Huskies. The Green and White stymied the Huskies' offensive attack, holding them to just 5-of-28 for a dismal 17.9 percent from the floor in addition to forcing 15 NIU turnovers.

The Green and White denied the Huskies any offensive production in the opening minutes of the second half while the Eagle offense surged to a 10-0 run in first six minutes out of the locker room. Schrock ignited the Eagles' attack with a layup in the paint and Huntley would later net four to move the score to 37-12 in favor of the home team. Desyree Thomas (Waterford, Mich.-Mott) scored six of her seven points in the second half to tie her career best mark. She also shot a perfect 3-for-3 from the floor.

The Huskies finally notched their first bucket in the second half after 5:56 of play when Courtney Shelton hit a mid-range jumper for her first points of the contest. NIU would go on to score 21 more points in the closing half, but the deficit was too much too much to handle, as the Green and White closed out the contest and secured the 62-35 victory.

The Eagles will return to action next Wednesday, Feb. 23, when they travel to face MAC West leader, Toledo for a 7 p.m. start.
