EMU Notches Win No. 20 with 3-1 Senior Night Victory

Ypsilanti, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University women's volleyball team downed the Central Michigan University Chippewas 3-1, Thursday, Nov. 3, in the Eagles' final home match of the season. After the four sets, it was only fitting as senior Ashley Mason set a new record for sets played in a career on Senior Night, passing 2010 senior Jennifer Swartz' previous record of 486. The win also hit a milestone for Head Coach Kim Berrington as it represented her 250th victory at the helm for the Eagles.
Eastern improves to 20-8 (8-5 MAC) on the season, while the Chippewas fell to 14-10 (7-6 MAC) on the year.
The Eagles won the first two matches 25-13 and 25-22, but dropped set three 25-23. The Green and White managed to turn it around in set four, closing the match with a 25-20 set victory.
Rachel Iaquaniello (Plymouth, Mich.-Dearborn Divine Child) led EMU with a double-double performance, picking up 16 kills and 16 digs, while Kristen Baker (Mentor, Ohio-Mentor) was a force at the net knocking home 11 kills for the Eagles. Megan Crawshaw (Mattawn, Mich.-Mattawan) nabbed a career-high nine kills and Paige Roback (Maumee, Ohio-Notre Dame Academy) notched eight of her own. Ashley Mason (Eastlake, Ohio-Lake Catholic) set up the Eagles' offense with 40 assists, while Cassie Sowers (Williamsport, Ohio-Wesfall) and Haley Stein (Carleton, Mich.-Monroe St. Mary's Catholic Central) were able to pick up 18 and 13 digs, respectively, on the defensive side.
The Eagles took advantage of the Chippewas' -.143 attack percentage in the opening frame to take a 25-13 set victory. Iaquaniello led the way with three kills for EMU, while Crawshaw and Mason each had a pair. Stein and Mason each helped set up the offense with three and four assists, respectively. Sowers led the Green and White with five digs defensively.
EMU hit .265 in the second frame en route to a two-set lead. Iaquaniello continued her offensive dominance with five kills in the frame, while Baker picked up three. Mason was able to rack up 13 assists in the set to help Eastern to the 25-22 set win. Central continued to struggle offensively hitting just .056 in the second set.
Baker led the offensive attack in the third set with four kills, but the Eagles were unable to sweep the Chips and dropped the frame 25-23. Crawshaw and Iaquaniello each picked up three kills in the frame and Iaquaniello was able to earn a double-double with 12 digs and 11 kills after three frames of play.
Iaquaniello had her best frame in the final set, picking up five kills for EMU in the 25-20 win. Roback notched five more kills in the frame, while Baker added three to her total. Mason was able to set-up 14 kills, adding 14 assists to her match total, while Sowers picked up eight more digs for the Green and White.
EMU will return to action when it motors off to Kent, Ohio Saturday, Nov. 5 to take on the Kent State Golden Flashes. First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m. at the Memorial Athletic and Convocation Center.
