Eagles Fall in Five Setter at Kent State

The Eagles dropped a road match with the Golden Flashes

The Eastern Michigan University women's volleyball team fell to the Kent State Golden Flashes in a Saturday match-up at Memorial Athletic and Convocation Center in Kent, Ohio. The Eagles were able to take the opening frame 25-18, dropped the next two, 19-25 and 19-25, won the fourth 25-18 but dropped the final frame 12-15.

Eastern fell to 20-9 (8-6 MAC) while the Golden Flashes advanced to 10-20 (3-12 MAC).

Eastern was led by Paige Roback (Maumee, Ohio-Notre Dame Academy) who had 19 kills and maintained a .561 attack percentage. Rachel Iaquaniello (Plymouth, Mich.-Dearborn Divine Child) added 19 kills of her own, as well as 15 digs, good for her 10th double-double of the season. Kristen Baker (Mentor, Ohio-Mentor) chipped-in with nine kills, while Ashley Mason (Eastlake, Ohio-Lake Catholic) notched 46 assists and 18 digs for the Eagles. Defensively, EMU had two more double-digit dig performances as Haley Stein (Carleton, Mich.-Monroe St. Mary's Catholic Central) and Cassie Sowers (Williamsport, Ohio-Wesfall) had 19 and 16, respectively.

The Eagles took the opening set 25-18 with Iaquaniello and Roback leading the way for EMU with five kills each. Mason set-up the Eagles with 14 assists in the frame, while Stein picked up seven digs in the opening frame for the Green and White.

Roback added four more kills in the second frame as the Green and White dropped the set 25-19. Iaquaniello and Baker added three kills each, but the Golden Flashes held a .341 attack percentage (19-4-44) which proved to be the difference in the second set.

Iaquaniello was the only Eagle with multiple kills in the third set as Eastern fell 25-19. EMU hit -0.30 in the third set, while Kent State hit .235 for the frame.

The Eagles were able to take the fourth set with help from Iaquaniello's five kills. Roback was able to add four more, while Baker hit three more kills home in the frame. Mason had 12 assists in the Eagles 25-18 set win.

Despite hitting .562 (10-1-16) in the final frame, the Eagles dropped the set 15-12. Roback was able to notch six kills in the set, but Eastern fell to Kent State with the 15-12 loss.

The Eagles finish out their 2011 regular season with a pair of road matches next weekend. EMU starts the road trip with a match at Ball State, Thursday, Nov. 10. First-serve is set for 7 p.m. in Muncie, Ind.
