Eagles Complete Season Sweep of Cardinals with Four Set Victory

Eastern was able to drop the Ball State Cardinals with a 3-1 victory on the road Thursday night

MUNCIE, Ind. (EMUEagles.com) –
The Eastern Michigan University women's volleyball squad dropped the Ball State Cardinals in four sets Thursday, Nov. 10, to pick up its 21st win of the season. The Eagles took the opening set, 25-21, fell in the second, 23-25, but took the final two frames, 25-18 and 28-26. The Green and White rode a .301 hitting percentage to the victory.

Eastern advanced to 21-9 (9-6 MAC) on the season with the victory while the Cardinals fell to 22-6 (11-4 MAC) on the year.

The Eagles spread the wealth offensively as Rachel Iaquaniello (Plymouth, Mich.-Dearborn Divine Child) led the way with 17 kills in the match, while Kristen Baker (Mentor, Ohio-Mentor) maintained a .556 attack percentage (16-1-27) with 16 kills in the Eagles' win. Erin Short (Orrville, Ohio-Orrville) and Paige Roback (Maumee, Ohio-Notre Dame Academy) each contributed nine kills, while freshman Megan Crawshaw (Mattawan, Mich.-Mattawan) added seven of her own. Ashley Mason (Eastlake, Ohio-Lake Catholic) was stellar setting up the offense as she accumulated 52 assists in the win, averaging 13 assists per set. Defensively, Mason and Haley Stein (Carleton, Mich.-Monroe St. Mary's Catholic Central) paced the Green and White with 16 and 15 digs, respectively.

Baker dominated for the Eagles in the opening frame, picking up seven kills in the 25-21 set victory. Iaquaniello added four kills of her own, while Crawshaw tallied three. Stein charted 10-of-her-15 digs in the first set, while Mason notched 13 assists. As a team, the Eagles hit .273 (15-3-44) while the Cardinals maintained a .268 attack percentage (16-5-41) in the opening set.

Despite dropping the second set, 23-25, Eastern was consistent offensively hitting .273 (14-5-33) for a second straight frame. Iaquaniello and Roback tallied four kills each, while Baker and Short each notched a trio. Mason was able to bring her assist total to 25 by adding 12 more, but EMU was not able to overcome the Cardinals .306 (16-5-36) attack percentage.

The third set proved to be the Eagles' most dominant frame of the match as they we able to maintain a .389 attack percentage (17-3-36). Baker led the way with five kills, while Crawshaw tallied three. Mason was able to go a perfect 3-for-3 in attacks and added 12 more assists for the Eagles. Eastern was able to hold Ball State to just a .163 hitting percentage (14-7-43) in the 25-18 set victory.

The fourth and final frame EMU hit .273 (15-6-33) again. Short was able to go 4-for-5 in attacks, good for an .800 attack percentage, while Iaquaniello added seven more kills to her total. The final set was Mason's best as she was able to notch 15 assists, helping the Eagles to a 28-26 set victory.

Eastern takes their talent on the road to Toledo, Ohio as they look to sweep the Rockets for the 2011 campaign Saturday, Nov. 12. The Eagles and Rockets square-off at 5 p.m. in each team's final match of the regular season. EMU looks to sew-up the fifth seed in the Mid-American Conference Volleyball Tournament with a victory against Toledo.
