Eagles Fall in Five Set Heartbreaking Season Finale at Toledo

TOLEDO, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University women's volleyball team dropped their final regular season match of the season to the Toledo Rockets Saturday, Nov. 12. After taking the first set, 25-23, the Eagles fell in the next frame, 22-25. EMU came back to take the third set, 25-18, but fell in the fourth 26-28. In the deciding fifth set, the Green and White was unable to top Toledo 13-15.
The Green and White fell to 21-10 (9-7 MAC) with the loss, while Toledo improved to 10-18 (5-11 MAC) to finish out their 2011 campaign.
Rachel Iaquaniello (Plymouth, Mich.-Dearborn Divine Child) led the Eagles as she tallied her 12th double-double of the season by notching 22 kills and 17 digs. Junior Kristen Baker (Mentor, Ohio-Mentor) racked up 12 kills, while Erin Short (Orrville, Ohio-Orrville) posted a .357 hitting percentage (11-1-28). Paige Roback (Maumee, Ohio-Notre Dame Academy) had 11 kills, while Ashley Mason (Eastlake, Ohio-Lake Catholic) accumulated 50 assists and 11 digs in the Eagles' loss. Defensively, Haley Stein (Carleton, Mich.-Monroe St. Mary's Catholic Central) led Eastern with 27 digs, while Cassie Sowers (Williamsport, Ohio-Wesfall) picked up 14 digs for EMU.
Eastern took the opening set by a 25-23 mark after spreading the wealth offensively. Baker, Crawshaw, Iaquaniello and Short each had three kills in the set, while Mason tallied 12 assists to help EMU to a one-set lead. Baker was also able to add three block assists in the opening frame.
The Eagles dropped the second frame by a score of 22-25 with Roback leading the way. The sophomore had four kills for the Green and White. Iaquaniello and Short added three kills apiece, while Baker and Crawshaw each had a pair of kills. Mason added 11 more to her total assists in the second frame as the Rockets evened things up at a set apiece.
The Green and White took a 2-1 lead by winning the third frame 25-18 after hitting .316 (15-3-38). Iaquaniello led the way with seven kills, while Baker went 4-of-7 with a .571 attack percentage. Roback and Short each chipped in with a pair of kills to help Eastern to a 2-1 lead.
EMU dropped the fourth set by a 26-28 mark, despite an eight-kill performance by Iaquaniello. Mason went 4-for-4 in attack attempts in the set, while Roback and Short added a pair of kills. Eastern hit just .125 for the frame as Toledo made it 2-2.
The Eagles fell in the final frame 13-15 after hitting just .107 (7-4-28).
The Eagles next match will take place in Geneva, Ohio when they play their first-round match of the Mid-American Conference Volleyball Tournament Friday, Nov. 18, at the SPIRE Sports Complex. As the fifth seed in the tournament, the Green and White will take on the four-seeded Ball State University in the opening round of MAC Tournament play. Game time is schedule for 11 a.m.
