YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) -
The Eastern Michigan volleyball squad continues its 2011 schedule with a pair of Mid-American Conference matches this weekend. Eastern opens up with a 7 p.m. match at the Convocation Center when it takes on the Central Michigan Chippewas Thursday, Nov. 3 in EMU's final home match of the season. After the Eagles match with CMU, seniors Ashley Mason, Cassie Sowers and Haley Stein will be recognized for their successful careers with EMU. Eastern hits the road with another MAC match against the Kent State Golden Flashes. First serve is set for 7 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 5.

EAGLES HIT A SKID AT THE TURN: The Eastern Michigan University women's volleyball team has hit a skid as its dropped two straight matches in Mid-American Conference play this past weekend.

Eastern first fell to the Huskies of Northern Illinois in four sets at the Convocation Center Friday, Oct 28. EMU followed that loss with a setback to the Broncos of Western Michigan in four sets on the following evening Saturday, Oct. 29.

ALL-TIME VERSUS THIS WEEK'S FIELD: The Eagles open up the weeked with their final Mid-American Conference home match against the Central Michigan Chippewas. EMU has struggled in its history with CMU, going just 21-52. Eastern is looking to avenge its five-set loss earlier this season to the Chippewas in Mount Pleasant, Mich.  Eastern is looking to take its 22nd match all-time from the Chips with first-serve set for 7 p.m., Thursday, Nov. 3. EMU's last win against Central came back on Oct. 28, 2010, in a 3-2 win at CMU.

Following its match with the Chippewas, the Green and White will motor off to Kent, Ohio to take on the struggling Kent State Golden Flashes. In its history, EMU has been very successful against the Golden Flashes with a 31-16-1 record all-time. In their last match, the Eagles lambasted Kent State in straight sets at home, but they've split in their matches dating back to 2006. The last time Eastern took two straight from the Golden Flashes was when it won in consecutive seasons back in 2005 and 2006.

LAST TIME VERSUS THE CHIPPEWAS: The Eastern Michigan University women's volleyball team dropped its third conference match of the season, Thursday, Sept. 29, at Central Michigan when they fell 3-2. The Eagles picked up the opening two sets, 26-24, and 25-22, but the victory eluded Eastern as they dropped the final three frames, 25-27, 16-25, 9-15.

Paige Roback paced the Eagles' offense with 16 kills and a .351 attack percentage (16-3-37) in the loss. The Green and White had two other athletes with double-digit kills as both Kristen Baker and Rachel Iaquaniello each had 13 kills against the Chips. Megan Crawshaw set another career-high in her first season with seven kills. Ashley Mason setup the Eastern offense with 49 assists, while Haley Stein had a team-high 24 digs in the loss.

Kaitlyn Schultz hurt the Eagles in the match with 21 kills, while posting a .462 hitting percentage (21-3-39). Val Derweed, Danielle Gotham, Kaitlyn McIntyre and Lindsey Dulude each picked up double-digit kills for the Chips, while Kelly Maxwell had 62 assists and Jenna Coates led the match with 28 digs.

MASON'S MOVIN' UP: In her fourth year setting for the Eagles, Ashley Mason is sitting at second all-time in career assists with 4,585 as an Eagle. She trails just Kate Sulewski (5,474).  Mason has continued to showcase her skills at the setter position by picking up 1,013 assists to this point in the 2011 campaign. Her 10.84 assists per set in Mid-American Conference matches ranks fifth in the MAC. Atop the conference in assists per match is Kristin Hoffman of Northern Illinois with 12.43.

Defensively, Mason is second on the Eagles roster in digs this season as she has racked up 268 throughout the course of the year. She has moved into eighth place in the Eastern Michigan career digs list with 1,230.

Mason is also sitting at second on the most sets played by an Eagle all-time with 484. She trails just Jennifer Swartz (486), but should break that record in Eastern's match with Central Michigan Thursday, Nov. 3.

CLAWING TO CLAIM CAREER RECORD: Libero Haley Stein has continued to build on her successful junior campaign. The senior is leading the Eagles with 549 digs on the season.

Stein has been successful in the Mid-American Conference, ranking first in MAC matches for digs with 6.12 per set. Lena Oliver (5.55) and Catie Fredrich (5.17) are second and third in the conference behind Stein.

Stein also has a chance at setting a career record in digs. At second on the career digs list with 2,062, she is trailing EMU's all-time digs leader Ashley Cudney (2,198).

Stein set a single-season record for digs in 2010 by picking up 757. She was also named to the All-MAC First Team in last season's campaign after leading the MAC in digs. Stein ranked fifth nationally in digs per set with 5.73. She was also second nationally with her 757 digs. Stein also set a school record for digs in a match when she had 55, Oct. 8, against Western Michigan.

HISTORIC CAREER IN THE MAKING: The Eagles' junior outside hitter Rachel Iaquaniello is second in the Mid-American Conference with 3.97 kills per set this season. Iaquaniello is trailing only Lauren Wicinski in the MAC who averages 5.50 for Northern Illinois.

Iaquaniello holds a .203 attack percentage after accumulating 28.3 percent of the Eagles'  total attacks through the 2011 campaign.  Iaquaniello has 1,108 total attacks this season which is over 400 more than anyone else on the EMU squad. Paige Roback is second with 657.

The junior is moving up the Eastern Michigan career kill ranks as she sits at fourth overall in EMU history with 1,308 kills. Roxanne Munch sits on the top of that list with 1,537 kills in her career. Iaquaniello is sitting at third overall in career attack attempts with 3,825, with Jennifer Nighswander leading that category with 4,456.

Defensively, Iaquaniello is third in digs for Eastern. She averages 2.66 digs per set.

BERRINGTON CHASING MILESTONES: Eastern Michigan Head Coach Kim Berrington picked up her 350th career victory as a head volleyball coach including her tenure with the Concordia Cardinals prior to joining the Eagles program.

Although Berrington is already the winningest coach in EMU volleyball history, she is closing in on her 250th win at the helm of the EMU squad. She is sitting at 249 wins with Eastern and looks to pick up her 250th win through the 2011 campaign.

HEAVY HITTER COMIN' IN: The Chippewas'  Kaitlyn Schultz has proved to be very impressive offensively this season at the middle blocker position. Schultz is leading the Mid-American Conference this season in hitting percentage at .398 (192-38-387).

The Highland, Mich. native has turned it up a notch since starting MAC matches as well. She is hitting a solid .461 (152-22-282) in CMU's conference tilts. The next closest is Katie Post of Ohio, who is hitting .382 (105-26-207) in conference matches this season.

IN THE BOTTOM TIER: Kent State currently ranks in the bottom-four in each of the major categories for the Mid-American Conference. KSU's best ranking comes in blocks where they rank ninth of 12 teams.

The Golden Flashes are last in four categories since starting MAC play this season including hitting percentage, assists, kills and digs.

Kent State is hitting .134 in MAC matches, while Eastern holds a .198 attack percentage which ranks seventh in the MAC. Kent State is averaging 9.05 assists per set this season, while the Eagles are averaging 12.53 good for sixth. In kills, the Golden Flashes are last with 9.89 kills per set and the Eagles are sixth with 13.40 kills per set. Finally, KSU is last in digs per set with 10.76, while the Green and White is second averaging 18.37.

OFFENSIVE SLIP-UP: The Eastern Michigan offense struggled to get things going this weekend, going 0-2 against MAC-West Division rivals Northern Illinois and Western Michigan. The Green and White hit just .158 in the two losses, while it allowed the opponents to combine for a .259 attack percentage. Eastern had 49 attack errors in its two matches, while the opponents had 10 less at 39. Offensively, the Eagles had just one category in which they exceled past their opponents as they were able to pile up almost twice as many service aces as the Huskies and Broncos.
