YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com)–The Eastern Michigan University women's soccer team is primed to take on a pair of Mid-American Conference foes this weekend. The Eagles face Bowling Green Friday, Oct. 7, in Bowling Green, Ohio, before returning home to play Miami Sunday, Oct. 9. Friday's match is slated for 4 p.m., while Sunday's game begins a 1 p.m.
I PLAY FOR KEEPS: EMU (0-9-2; 0-3-1 MAC) looks to begin its run at a spot in the MAC Tournament Friday against the Falcons (4-9-0; 1-3-0 MAC), who sit tied for last in the MAC East Division with the RedHawks (6-5-0; 1-3-1 MAC), who invade Scicluna Field Sunday.
“We still have a chance to get points and get ourselves into the playoffs, but we know our backs are against the wall,” remarked Head Coach Scott Hall.
WINDOWS LEADIN' TO THE PAST: Eastern Michigan and Bowling Green will meet for the 19th time Friday, with the Eagles holding a 10-7-1 advantage in the series including a four-game winning streak dating back to the 2007 campaign. Last season, the Eagles and Falcons combined for 10 goals in a thrilling 6-4 EMU victory at Scicluna Field.
Sunday will also mark the 19th meeting between EMU and Miami, with the Eagles leading that all-time series by a narrow 9-8-1 margin. The two teams played to a 1-1 tie last season in Oxford, Ohio.
WAITING ON THE OTHER SIDE: This weekend's slate of games will cap-off EMU's affairs with teams from the MAC East Division.
Friday's game features a Bowling Green team whose hardships are attributed to struggles on both sides of the ball. The Falcons have scored just nine goals (10th in MAC) with 23 allowed (11th in MAC) over 13 games.
Alyssa Zuccaro leads the Falcons offensively with four goals for eight points, and has started in all 13 games this season. Goalkeepers Becca Ison and Laura Arnold have been busy this season, stopping a combined 70 shots which ranks third in the MAC.
Bowling Green's 156 fouls make it the most penalized team in the conference. In addition, the Falcons' six yellow cards trail only Miami (7) in that category.
The RedHawks were divisions champions just a year ago, but find themselves scuffling at the bottom of the East so far this season with a 1-3 conference record. Miami cruised into conference play with a record of 5-2, but have since cooled off to the tune of just three goals over its last four games.
Leading the charge for the RedHawks will be sophomore midfielder Kayla Zakrzewski, who has six goals and a pair of assists for 14 points. Joining her are Jess Kodiak and Katy Dolesh, who have five and four goals on the year, respectively.
One of Eastern Michigan's biggest challenges against both teams will be making the most of quality scoring chances. “It's all about taking your scoring chances and making them count when you can,” said Head Coach Scott Hall.
LOOK BOTH WAYS: The Green and White is coming off an emotional weekend which saw the team snap a five-game stretch without a goal in home matches against Kent State, Sept. 30, and Buffalo, Oct. 2.
The Eagles came a goalpost and a crossbar shy of capturing its first win of the season in a heartbreaking 2-1 loss to Kent State Friday. Bianca Rossi scored her first-career goal in the 86th minute to knot the contest at one, but the Golden Flashes tallied the game-winner just over a minute later.
Stephanie Clarke grazed a shot off the left goalpost in the opening frame and Angela Vultaggio drilled a rising header off the crossbar in the second half.
It was Rossi again who got EMU on the board Sunday against Buffalo after the Bulls had taken an early 1-0 lead. Five minutes later, the Eagles benefited from an own goal to give them their first lead in a game since Aug. 28 against IUPUI. The game ended in a 2-2 tie.
THE KIDS ARE ALRIGHT: They might be just freshmen, but this year's group of newcomers has accounted for five of Eastern Michigan's seven goals.
Bianca Rossi and Angela Vultaggio have each registered a pair of goals on the season, while Emily Dizk has chipped in with one.
“Our freshmen are really starting to grow up,” said Head Coach Scott Hall.
Vultaggio is the team leader in points with five, and is tied with senior Chelsea Detrick in shots on goal with 13.
SEARCHING FOR THE RESOLUTION: The Eagles fired a season-high 33 shots in Sunday's game against Buffalo. Overall, EMU has takes 169 shots (15.36 per game), earning them a fifth place tie with Central Michigan.
Unfortunately, EMU has only parlayed that shot total into seven goals which ranks 11th in the MAC. Ball State leads the way in that category with 24 goals.
FIRST STEP: Chelsie Oddan registered her first point of the season Sunday with an assist on Bianca Rossi's goal. The redshirt freshman started her fourth match of the season and was a strong presence at midfield during her 95 minutes of action.
ON MY OWN: In case you were curious, Buffalo's “own goal” Sunday is officially scored as a “team” goal for EMU. No individual points are awarded to the attacking team, and no points are deducted from the defending team.
LIVIN' IN THE FUTURE: The 2011 Mid-American Conference Tournament gets underway Sunday, Oct. 30. The two division champions will earn the top two seeds in the tournament, while the rest of the eight-team field will be seeded solely according to point total.
The tournament begins at campus sites and will then move to the home of the highest remaining seed for the semifinals and final which will take place Nov. 4-6.
