Cara Cutaia scores lone goal for EMU

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio (EMUEagles.com)— The Eastern Michigan University women's soccer team lost a first half lead to Bowling Green State University and eventually fell, 2-1, in overtime Friday afternoon, Oct. 7. Cara Cutaia scored her second goal of the season in a losing effort.

The Eagles (0-10-2; 0-4-1 MAC) controlled the pace in the first half, with Cutaia putting a shot past Becca Ison in the 35th minute to give EMU a 1-0 lead. The Falcons (5-9-0; 2-3-0 MAC) responded with the tying goal in the 60th minute on a header by Alyssa Zuccaro.

Just over a minute into sudden death overtime, Sidney Huth sent her third shot of the game past EMU goalkeeper Maggie Manville to hold the Eagles winless on the season.

Cutaia and Angela Vultaggio each drilled shots off the crossbar Friday to mark three straight games in which EMU attackers have hit the bar or post at least once in a game.

Both teams registered five shots on goal, with the Eagles edging the Falcons in total shots, 16-14. Cutaia was EMU's key playmaker in the match with six shots and two on goal.

Leading up to the opening goal, the EMU offense was dangerous in front of the Bowling Green net. A header from Chelsea Detrick missed the target wide left in the 28th minute. Moments later, Vultaggio came up empty on a shot which was denied by Bowling Green goalkeeper Becca Ison.

Eastern Michigan finally gained a 1-0 lead in the 35th minute when Cutaia notched her second goal on the season from Amanda Marsh.

The Falcons threatened to tie the contest in the waning minutes of the half, but a trio of shots missed their target and sailed harmlessly past the cage.

Vultaggio came a crossbar away from her third goal of the year in the 55th minute. With Bowling Green reeling defensively, the Falcons offense rushed down the field into EMU territory. On a left-side crossing pass, Zuccaro laced a shot past Manville to tie the score.

The final scoring chance of the half came in the 86th minute, when a Cutaia header was saved by Ison.

Overtime lasted just 93 seconds when Huth scored the game winner for Bowling Green.

The Eagles will look to avenge a tough loss Sunday afternoon, Oct. 9, when they host Miami University at Scicluna Field. Kickoff is slated for 1 p.m.
