EMU snaps nine-game winless streak
Box Score.
YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com)— On a sunny, breezy afternoon, the Eastern Michigan University women's soccer team snapped its nine-match losing skid with a 2-2 draw Sunday, Oct. 2, against the University at Buffalo at Scicluna Field. Bianca Rossi scored her second goal in as many games and EMU benefited from a Buffalo own goal to earn the tie.
Taylor Thompson opened the scoring for Buffalo just three minutes into the contest, but the Green and White quickly responded when Rossi scored on a tic-tac-toe play from Anglea Vultaggio and Chelsie Oddan.
In the 13th minute, a defensive miscue deep in Buffalo territory resulted in an own goal for Eastern Michigan and a 2-1 edge. The lead remained in tact until the 44th minute, when Aubrey Stahl knotted the game's final goal.
The Eagles (0-9-2; 0-3-1 MAC) fired a season-high 33 shots with 10 reaching goal. Ten different players registered at least two shots, with Stephanie Clarke and Cara Cutaia tallying five shots.
Buffalo (8-2-2; 1-1-2 MAC) tallied 25 shots of their own with 10 on goal.
Allison Kaim was issued a yellow card for EMU, and Jackie Hall was penalized for UB.
Head Coach Scott Hall rolled out a slighly altered starting lineup Sunday, with Kaim starting for just the third time this season and Rossi earning a starting role for the fifth time in 11 matches. Rossi made the most of her start by knotting the contest, 1-1, in the eighth minute.
Five minutes later, Kaim centered a pass to Rossi, who was met by a Buffalo defender. In an attempt to kick the ball out of bounds behind the UB goal, the ball curved back toward the net and bounced past the right goalpost and across the line to give the Eagles their first lead in a game since Aug. 28 against IUPUI.
The next scoring chance for either team came in the 33rd minute when Stahl sent a shot square off the cross bar.
With time ticking down in the first half, Stahl then received a pass 10 yards beyond the penalty area and launched a shot toward the top-right shelf of the goal. A leaping Maggie Manville was unable to reach the ball and the score was once again tied, 2-2.
In the second half, Cutaia had a pair of scoring chances which failed to find the back of the net. Cutaia was robbed by goalkeeper Ainsley Wheldon in the 73rd minute on a shot labeled for the lower right corner of the net. Then in the 83rd minute, a seeing-eye shot from a sharp angle grazed the inside of the right goalpost and stayed out.
Emily Dzik nearly gave the Eagles the lead when a header off a corner kick from Clarke was blocked away by a UB defender.
The Bulls had the bulk of the scoring chances in the overtime periods, but the EMU defense stood tall with a pair of key blocks to keep the game tied.
EMU will continue its trek through the Mid-American Conference schedule Friday, Oct. 7, with a trip to Bowling Green, Ohio to face the Falcons. Game time is set for 4 p.m.
