Complete Release (.pdf)
YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com)– Fresh off a thrilling overtime victory against Miami University, the Eastern Michigan University women's soccer team (1-10-2; 1-4-1 MAC) hits the road for a pair of Mid-American Conference West Division contests Friday, Oct. 14, at Northern Illinois University (2-10-2; 1-5-0 MAC) and Sunday, Oct. 16, at Western Michigan University (7-7-0; 3-3-0 MAC).
DOUBLING UP: Friday's action against NIU begins at 2 p.m. in DeKalb, Ill., while Sunday's game with WMU starts at 1 p.m. in Kalamazoo, Mich.
WMU currently sits in fourth place in the West Division, while EMU holds down the fifth spot and NIU is in sixth.
I LIKE MY CHANCES: With a win under their collective belts, the Eagles are ready to take on a pair of teams against whom they have enjoyed past success. EMU is a staggering 11-3-2 against the Huskies entering the 17th all-time meeting between the two teams. Last season, the Eagles took care of NIU, 3-1, at Scicluna Field.
Against the Broncos, Eastern Michigan holds a 8-7-4 series advantage heading into the 19th meeting with WMU. The Eagles enter Sunday looking for redemption against their in-state rivals, who knocked the Green and White out of the MAC Tournament in 2010 with an opening round win on penalty kicks, Oct. 31, at Scicluna Field.
FROM WHAT I HEAR: EMU will take on a pair of teams this weekend which have turned in mixed results this season.
The Huskies come in with an overall record of 2-10-2 and a 1-5-0 mark in conference play. They have scored just seven goals in 14 games (last in the MAC) with 25 goals against (10th). In six conference games, NIU has tallied four goals and has given up 10.
NIU's points-leader is Frances Boukidis who has seven points (two goals, three assists). Samantha Hill is the only other member of the team with multiple goals (two) this season. Additionally, NIU has taken just 161 shots this season while sitting 11th in the conference with a 1.72 goals against average.
Like the Eagles, the Huskies field a young team with 18-of-25 members their squad at sophomore or freshman status.
The Broncos have posted an even 3-3 record through six MAC games this season. They have scored 11 times during that span while giving up just nine goals.
WMU has several scoring threats in MAC points-leader Stephanie Skowneski (19), who has six goals and seven assists. Anina Cicernoe leads the Broncos in scoring with seven goals (16 points).
Starting goalkeeper Michelle Watson enters the game with a 7-6-0 record and a 1.35 goals against average.
WINNERS!: Angela Vultaggio netted a pair of goals including the overtime game-winner to propel the Eagles to a 2-1 victory Sunday, Oct. 9, against Miami at Scicluna Field. The true freshman scored on a breakaway in the 99th minute to capture the Eagles' first win of the 2011 season.
Eastern Michigan held a 1-0 lead until the 87th minute, when Miami's Jess Kodiak tied the score to overtime.
In sudden death, Vultaggio raced past several flat-footed Miami defenders and sailed a shot past goalkeeper Allison Norenberg.
The Eagles celebrated their first MAC win of the season as well as their first win overall since Oct. 22, 2010 against Ball State University.
Vultaggio earned her team-leading third and fourth goals of the season, with Cara Cutaia and Amanda Marsh recording an assist apiece.
As a team, EMU needed just three shots on goal to walk away with the victory. At the other end, Maggie Manville denied 9-of-10 RedHawks shots, including a brilliant save early in the second half to preserve an EMU lead.
LET'S KEEP PLAYING: Sunday's 2-1 overtime win marked the third consecutive match and fifth time overall this season in which the Eagles needed an extra period to reach the game's conclusion. In those contests, the squad is 1-2-2.
LOCKED CAGE: Senior goalkeeper Maggie Manville's 13 saves over the weekend have propelled her into second place in the MAC for total saves. Manville has stopped 83 shots in 13 games which amounts to 6.38 saves per contest.
SPLIT THE DIFFERENCE: With the MAC season half in the books, the Eagles will play the final five games of the 2011 regular season against teams from the West Division.
After road matches against NIU and WMU, Eastern Michigan will finish-off the season with a trio of home matches against Ball State University, Oct. 21, the University of Toledo, Oct. 23, and Central Michigan University, Oct. 27.
The game against CMU is Senior Day at Scicluna Field, when the five EMU seniors– Chelsea Detrick, Julie Kaim, Amanda and Katie Marsh, and Maggie Manville– will be honored for their on-field excellence while donning the green and white uniform.
WHERE WE SIT: The Eagles are currently fifth in the MAC West Division with a record of 1-4-1. They sit behind Toledo (5-0-1), CMU (4-0-2), Ball State (4-1-1) and WMU (3-3-).
In the East Division, Ohio University is in first place with a record of 3-2-1.
To earn a berth in the postseason, the Eagles must place no lower than eighth out of the 12 MAC teams. Currently, they are 10th.
IT'S ALMOST TIME: The 2011 Mid-American Conference Tournament gets underway Sunday, Oct. 30. The two division champs will earn the top two seeds in the tournament, while the rest of the eight-team field will be seeded solely according to point total.
The tournament begins at campus sites and will then move to the home of the highest remaining seed for the semifinals and final which will take place Nov. 4-6.
