The Eastern Michigan volleyball squad continues its 2011 schedule with a pair of Mid-American Conference matches this weekend. Eastern opens up with a 7 p.m. match on the road in Oxford, Ohio when they take on the Miami RedHawks at Millett Hall Friday, Oct. 14. After the Eagles match with Miami, they head to Bowling Green to take on the Falcons at the brand new Stroh Center. First serve is set for 7 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 15.

BACK ON TRACK: After dropping four of five matches, the Eagles have returned back to their winning ways by taking two Mid-American Conference matches at home. Eastern topped the Rockets of Toledo in straight sets Friday, Oct. 7, and continued their stellar play, Saturday, Oct. 8 when they handed the Ball State Cardinals their first MAC loss of the season, 3-1. EMU looks to make it three-in-a row Friday, Oct. 14 at Miami.

ALL-TIME VERSUS THIS WEEK'S FIELD: The Eagles open up the weeked with a Mid-American Conference match on the road at Miami. EMU has struggled in its history with Miami, going just 13-34. However, Eastern is looking to win their third straight match of the season, but will have its hands full with Cassie Farrell, who was a preseason All-MAC East Division selection. Farrell is leading the RedHawks in kills and blocks this season. She averages 2.17 kills per set which is second for Miami and 0.80 blocks per set, which leads the RedHawks. Miami has a pair of athletes that have set the ball well for the RedHawks this season. Amy Kendall leads them with 433 assists and 6.87 per set, while Meg Riley is second with 387 assists and 4.97 per set.

Following its match with the RedHawks, the Green and White motor off to Bowling Green State to take on the Falcons at the Stroh Center in Bowling Green, Ohio. Eastern is just 23-28 all-time against the Falcons. BGSU has a preseason All-MAC East Division selection of its own in Paige Penrod. Penrod is second on the Falcons in kills with 229 and 3.39 per set. She trails just Danielle Tonyan. Defensively, Kari Galen is fifth in the MAC in blocks per set with 1.08. Galen has been solid offensively, leading the MAC in hitting percentage at .392.

THIS WEEK'S OPPONENTS: The Eagles take on two Mid-American Conference teams that have had success this season: the Miami RedHawks and the Bowling Green State Falcons.

Miami is the first of Eastern's opponents this weekend. The RedHawks are 12-8 (3-3 MAC) after dropping their last two MAC matches. Miami's last victory came against the 4-15 Akron Zips Saturday, Oct. 1, when they won 3-0 at home. Most recently, the RedHawks dropped a match with Northern Illinois in straight sets. EMU was able to top NIU earlier this season, 3-1.

Following Toledo, EMU takes on the Falcons on Bowling Green State. The Falcons are 16-3 (3-3 MAC) after losing two of their last three MAC matches, including a five-set loss to the Bulls of Buffalo, Saturday, Oct. 1. The Falcons only losses on the 2011 season have been to MAC opponents. BGSU's first loss of the season came in their MAC opener Friday, Sept. 23, when they fell in straight sets on the road. In their last match, the Falcons fell to Western Michigan on the road. WMU handed Bowling Green their third loss by a tally of 3-1.

MIAMI'S HIT wo-MEN: Miami has had a trio of competitors with success in their attacks through the Mid-American Conference season. The RedHawks have three hitters in the top six in MAC action for hitting percentage. Cassie Farrell, who was a preseason All-MAC East Division selection, ranks third in the conference with a .384 attack percentage, while Christina Menche is tied for fourth at .368 and Amy Raseman ranks sixth at .355.

For Eastern, the top hitter in MAC matches based on hitting percentage has been sophomore, Paige Roback, who has a .279 attack percentage in its six MAC matches this season.

A TALE OF TWO DIGGERS: The Falcons have struggled defensively this season. They are tied for dead last in the Mid-American Conference with Kent State in digs per set this season with 12.44.

Eastern Michigan on the other hand has been very successful digging the ball. EMU ranks second in digs per set in the MAC with 18.01. The Green and White trail just Western Michigan in digs per set with 18.45. Although they do not lead in digs per set, the Eagles do lead in total digs with 1,405, while WMU is second with 1,273.

STEIN INCHING CLOSER TO THE CAREER LEAD IN DIGS: Libero Haley Stein has continued to build on her successful junior campaign. The senior is leading the Eagles with 412 digs on the season.

Stein has been successful in the MAC, ranking second overall in digs with 5.27 per set. She trails just Lena Oliver of Western Michigan who is at 6.67 digs per set.

Stein is also on her way to setting a career record in digs. At second on the career digs list with 1,925, she is trailing EMU's all-time digs leader Ashley Cudney (2,198) .

Stein set a single-season record for digs in 2010 by picking up 757. She was also named to the All-MAC First Team in last season's campaign after leading the MAC in digs. Stein ranked fifth nationally in digs per set with 5.73. She was also second nationally with her 757 digs. Stein also set a school record for digs in a match when she had 55, Oct. 8, against Western Michigan.

The Carleton, Mich. native is also a two-time Academic All-MAC selection, being named to those teams in 2009 and 2010.

HITTING HER WAY TO HISTORY: The Eagles' junior outside hitter, Rachel Iaquaniello, is second in the Mid-American Conference with 3.83 kills per set. Iaquaniello is trailing only Lauren Wicinski in the MAC who has 5.71 for Northern Illinois.

Iaquaniello holds a .202 attack percentage after accumulating 27.8% of the Eagles'  total attacks through the 2011 campaign.  Iaquaniello has 852 total attacks this season which is 300 more than anyone else on the EMU squad as Paige Roback is second with 515.

The junior is moving up the Eastern Michigan career kill ranks as she sits at fifth overall in EMU history with 1,218 kills. Roxanne Munch sits on the top of that list with 1,537 kills in her career. Iaquaniello is sitting at third overall in career attack attempts with 3,569, with Jennifer Nighswander leading that category with 4,456.

Defensively, Iaquaniello is tied for second in digs for Eastern. She averages 2.80 digs per set.

EMU OFFENSE STRUGGLING IN THE MAC: The Eastern Michigan University volleyball team has struggled offensively since beginning Mid-American Conference play recently. In MAC matches the Eagles are hitting just .188. In contrast, Bowling Green and Miami are fourth (.238) and fifth (.235) in attack percentage during MAC matches.

Although EMU has struggled offensively at the net in MAC matches, they've held MAC opponents to just a .176 attack percentage which ranks third among conference teams. Bowling Green has allowed a .238 hitting percentage in MAC matches which is last in the conference, while Miami is in the middle of the pack defensively as they've held MAC opponents to a .226 attack percentage, which is seventh.

GETTING IT DONE ON BOTH SIDES: In her fourth year setting for the Eagles, Ashley Mason is sitting at third all-time in assists in her career with 4,444 as an Eagle. She trails just Kate Sulewski (5,474) and Sherry Anderson (4,513).  Mason has continued to showcase her skills at the setter position by picking up 780 assists to this point in the 2011 campaign. Her 10.13 assists per set in Mid-American Conference matches ranks sixth in the MAC. Atop the MAC in assists per match is Kristin Hoffman of Northern Illinois with 12.86.

Mason was fourth in the MAC in assists, averaging 10.72 per game which was good for 47th in NCAA Division I during the 2010 campaign.

Defensively, Mason is tied for second on the Eagles roster in digs this season as she has racked up 213 through the first 21 matches of the year. She has moved into eighth place in the Eastern Michigan career digs list with 1,175.
