Eagles Take Third Straight with Three-Set Victory at Miami

OXFORD, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University volleyball team won their third straight Mid-American Conference match Friday, Oct. 14, when they defeated the Miami RedHawks in three sets (25-21, 25-18, 25-23) on the road.
The Eagles advanced their record to 16-6 (4-3 MAC) while the RedHawks fell to 12-9 (3-4 MAC) in their 2011 campaign.
Kristen Baker (Mentor, Ohio-Mentor) led Eastern offensively with a .750 attack percentage (13-1-16), while Rachel Iaquaniello (Plymouth, Mich.-Dearborn Divine Child) was able to rack up 11 kills for the Green and White. Ashley Mason (Eastlake, Ohio-Lake Catholic) led the match with 34 assists and Haley Stein (Carleton, Mich.-Monroe St. Mary's Catholic Central) had a team-high 17 digs for the Eagles. Erin Short (Orrville, Ohio-Orrville) had a successful offensive match, hitting .316 (8-2-19).
Baker and Iaquaniello opened up the match with four kills each in the first set, while Mason had 13 assists en route to the 25-21 set win. As a team, the Eagles hit .286 (14-2-42) in the opening set to take an early 1-0 lead.
EMU used a .333 (13-3-30) attack percentage to take a two-set lead after taking the second set 25-18. Short led the Eagles with six kills, while Iaquaniello added four more to her total. Baker went a perfect 2-for-2 in attack attempts in the second set victory.
Baker led Eastern with seven kills in the final set of the match, in just nine attempts. Despite hitting just .147 (14-7-47) the Eagles took the final frame 25-23. Mason added 12 assists to her total in the last set helping the Green and White to their three set victory.
Eastern is back in action Saturday, Oct. 15 when they motor off to Bowling Green and look to take their fourth straight MAC win. First serve is set for 7 p.m. at the Stroh Center.
