YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) — The Eastern Michigan University women's basketball team won a season-high sixth straight game here Saturday afternoon, Jan. 8, at the Convocation Center with a 70-62 triumph over Ball State University. Tavelyn James led the Eagle attack with 25 points and Kristin Thomas tied a career-high in blocks with four.

Dominant under the basket, the Eagles scored 52 points in the paint and went 28-of-59 (47.5 percent) from the field. Additionally, EMU used 27 Cardinal turnovers for 32 points. A stingy EMU defense tallied 18 steals with Sydney Huntley, James and Cassie Schrock recording six, five and four, respectively. In addition, EMU managed eight blocks with Thomas (four), Redditt (two), Huntley and Schrock (one) as the major contributors.

Schrock fell just short of her second career triple-double with 19 points, 14 rebounds and seven assists, as she went 7-of-16 from the field and 5-of-11 from the line. James knocked-down 11-of-18 from the floor, 1-of-2 from beyond the arc, and 2-of-2 at the line. Paige Redditt contributed 11 points and grabbed seven boards in the victory.

Ball State had three players in double-figures with Katie Murphy scoring 17 points (7-of-12) to pace the Cardinal offense. Megan Craft added 12 points (4-of-6) from three-point range and Emily Maggert tallied 11 (5-of-12). As a team BSU struggled from the field, shooting at just a 36.9 percent (24-of-65) pace.

The Eagles improve to 11-5 overall and 2-0 in the MAC. Ball State falls to 5-10 overall and 0-2 in the MAC.

The Green and White controlled much of the action in the opening minutes during which it tallied six fast break points and nine points off of 10 Cardinal turnovers to take a 15-6 advantage with 13 minutes to play. James was the major contributor to the early surge with nine points including a three-point bucket.

Meanwhile, Ball State struggled to find the basket, shooting just 17.6 percent (3-of-17) from the field after 12 minutes. The Cardinals were also plagued by several unforced turnovers and struggled at times against EMU defenders under the basket. BSU finished the first half with 14 turnovers.

A strong offensive rebounding effort helped widen the Eastern Michigan lead to 24-12 with 5:30 remaining in the half. The Eagles ended the period with 23 rebounds (eight offensive, 15 defensive) and seven second-chance points.

In the closing seconds, BSU pulled back to within eight, 31-23, and was on the attack until Schrock notched a timely steal and sent De'Ja Wills breaking to the basket. Wills was fouled by Katie Murphy and filled one free throw to send the Eagles to the locker room with a 32-23 lead.

The Eagles shot at a 39.4 percent (13-of-33) clip and went 5-of-8 from the free throw line, while the Cardinals converted on 28.6 percent (8-of-28) of their filed goal attempts and 5-of-6 at the line.

James paced the EMU offense with 11 points (5-of-8) and was 1-of-1 from beyond the arc. Redditt was a perfect 4-of-4 from the field (eight points) and Huntley chipped-in with eight points (3-of-6) including a 2-of-2 effort from the line. Schrock led all Eagles in rebounds with six, while Redditt had four.

For the Cardinals, Murphy was 3-of-6 from the field and 2-of-2 at the charity stripe for eight points. Maggert hauled-in six rebounds, while Brandy Woody grabbed four.

Both teams traded baskets to begin the second half until the Eagles rattled-off eight straight points to extend the lead to 46-31 with 15:40 to play. The run was fueled by strong EMU defensive rebounding and a key block by Thomas on a Maggert three-point attempt.

A pair of buckets by Murphy brought Ball State back to within 10 points, 47-37, with 13:37 to play. Back-and-forth action continued through much of second half until a pair of thee-pointers by Woody and Craft cut the Eagle advantage to six, 63-57, with 2:36 remaining.

After fending-off several Ball State attacks, Schrock iced the game for the home team with a fast break layup following a Huntley steal to put the game out of reach for the visitors, 67-57. With BSU forced to foul for any hope of a late comeback, Schrock added three points by way of the free throw line to make the final score 70-62 for Eastern Michigan.

The Eagles continue their three-game homestand when they host MAC West Division rival Central Michigan University Wednesday, Jan. 12, at 7 p.m.
