YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) — The Eastern Michigan University women's basketball team lost a battle of Mid-American Conference unbeatens here Wednesday night, Jan. 12, as a visiting Central Michigan University squad recorded a 76-67 victory in the Convocation Center.

The Eagles and Chippewas entered the game with identical 2-0 league records and Central came back from an early-game double-digit deficit to post the win.

The loss drops EMU to 11-6 overall and 2-1 in league play while CMU improves to 11-4 and 3-0. Eastern will get right back into conference action Saturday, Jan. 15, at noon here in the Convocation Center against West Division rival Toledo. The game is slated for television on Sports Time Ohio.

The EMU backcourt tandem of Tavelyn James (Detroit, Mich.-Mumford) and Sydney Rogers (Cincinnati, Ohio-Purcell Marian) led the Eagles against CMU with 18 points each while Cassie Schrock (Wadsworth, Ohio-Wadsworth) scored 15.

Central was led by Shonda Long with 22 while Brandi Baker added 17, Kaihla Szunko 16 and Niki DiGuilio chipped in 10.

Eastern would shoot just 33.9 percent from the field on 20-of-59 shooting while CMU hit 26-of-58 shots for 44.8 percent. The Eagles were a dismal 1-of-15 from beyond the three-point arc for 6.7 percent while CMU hit 8-of-20 triples for 40 percent. Central also won the board battle, 44-36.

The Eagles used their quickness to race to an early 14-5 lead in the game's first five minutes with Rogers scoring nine of those points.

Eastern would raise its lead to 19-7 at the 14:25 mark on a triple from James, but the Eagles would then go stone cold, failing to score over the next 7:50 while Central roared back to gain a one-point lead, 20-19.

Schrock would finally break the drought with two free throws to put the Eagles back on top, 21-20, with 6:35 left in the half.

The two teams would trade buckets the rest of the half and the first 20 minutes would end in a 32-32 deadlock.

Eastern came out charged up to begin the second stanza, scoring the first four points to gain a 36-32 lead.

Once again the Chippewas would answer the call, going to their inside game to forge a 44-44 tie with 13:14 left in the game.

Central would keep that inside pressure on, increasing its lead to four, 51-47, but Eastern would manage to tie the game at 51-all on an old-fashioned three=point play from Schrock with 10:43 remaining.

The two teams would trade buckets over the next few minutes with CMU holding a 57-56 lead with 7:02 left in the game.

From that point on the momentum would belong to the visitors as they increased their lead to double figures before settling for the 74-65 win.
