THE BRIGHT LIGHTS OF TELEVISION SHINE ON SATURDAY'S MATINEE: The Eastern Michigan University women's basketball team hosts the University of Toledo Saturday, Jan. 15, in a Mid-American Conference West Division contest. Tipoff is slated for 12:07 p.m. at the Convocation Center. The Eagles enter the game with a mark of 11-6 (2-1 MAC) while the Rockets are 11-5 (3-0 MAC). Toledo and Central Michigan are deadlocked atop the MAC West Division with the Eagles just a game back.
The contest will be shown regionally on SportsTime Ohio with Mike Cairns providing the play-by-play and Jacki Windon serving as the analyst. If you cannot find the game through your cable provider, Eagle All-Access will also video stream the broadcast with subscription packages starting at just $5.95.

THE ALL-TIME SERIES: Things do not get any easier for EMU this weekend, as the Eagles host MAC West preseason favorite Toledo at the Convocation Center. Saturday's contest marks the 62nd meeting between Toledo and Eastern Michigan, who first met during the 1977-1978 season. The Rockets lead the overall series, 38-23. However, the Eagles have won seven of the last 10 meetings, as well as winning seven of the last eight contests played inside the confines of the Convocation Center.

“D” IS THE KEY: Saturday's game features two teams that pride themselves on defense, with Toledo and Eastern Michigan ranking third and fourth, respectively, in scoring defense in the Mid-American Conference. The Eagles have held seven teams this year under 60 points, while the Rockets have accomplished the feat nine times. Against Niagara, Dec. 28, Eastern's defense stymied the Purple Eagles, forcing 31 turnovers and 34 points. Meanwhile, Toledo held Saint Peter's to just 33 points in a 61-33 victory, Nov. 30.

THREE-BALLS, TRIPLES OR TRI-LIGHTERS: No matter what you call it, the three-point shot has proved to be either an hindrance or a help to the Eagles in 2010-11. Eastern Michigan has notched a 7-2 record when it connects on five-or-more threes in a contest, and conversely just 4-4 when it does not. When the three-pointers are falling the offense is clicking to the tune of 74.8 points per game and a 35.3 percent (65-of-184) clip. However, when struggling from long-range Eastern is only averaging 61.0 points per contest and a dismal 16.2 percent (19-of-117) from the long line.

A LOOK BACK AT THE SIX-GAME WINNING STREAK: Between Dec. 11 and Jan. 8 the Eagles strung together six straight victories by an average of 24.0 points per game (EMU 75.5, OPP 51.5). Eastern managed a 40.4 field goal percentage, while going to the charity stripe 189 times compared to just 98 for the opposition. The Green and White also forced its opponents to turn the ball over an average of 26.3 times per game, while grabbing 16.5 steals per contest.

SCHROCK NAMED MAC PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Senior guard Cassie Schrock was named the Mid-American Conference Women's Basketball West Division Player of the Week, the conference office announced Jan. 10. It marks the second time she has won the award in her career. Schrock continues to pace the Eagles, helping lead EMU to a 2-0 start in Mid-American Conference play with victories over Northern Illinois, Jan. 5, and Ball State, Jan. 8. Schrock averaged 21.5 points, 9.5 rebounds, 6.0 assists in 40 minutes per game. For the week, the Wadsworth, Ohio native was 12-of-26 from the floor and 17-of-23 from the charity stripe. At NIU, she racked up a season-best 24 points to go along with five rebounds and five assists. Schrock followed it up with 19 points, 14 rebounds, seven assists and four steals against the Cardinals.

THIS DATE IN EMU HISTORY: The game on Jan. 15 will mark the 10th time the Eagles will have played on that date, recording a 0-9 record all-time. The last occurrence came in 2008 when the Green and White were downed at Ball State University, 71-64.

ON THE HORIZON: The Jan. 19 contest at University Arena in Kalamazoo, Mich. marks the 68th meeting between the Western Michigan Broncos and Eastern Michigan Eagles, who first played during the 1976-77 season. EMU leads the all-time series, 37-30, and has won nine of the last 11 meetings. Eastern has won four of the last five meetings in Kalamazoo dating back to the 2005-06 campaign.

EAGLES VERSUS THE EAST DIVISION: The 2010-11 season is the sixth utilizing the current Mid-American Conference scheduling format for women's basketball. Each of the 12 schools opens league action with five divisional games, followed by six cross-divisional games and then five more divisional contest to close the regular season.
Eastern Michigan has posted a 25-21 record versus MAC East Division opponents since the 2004-05 campaign. Eastern finished 4-4 last season and was 2-5 in cross-divisional games in 2008-09, 4-3 in 2007-08, 4-4 in 2006-07, 6-2 in 2005-06 and 5-3 in 2004-05.

A LOOK INSIDE THE SPECIALTY STATS: The Eagles are averaging 32.5 points per game in the paint, 16.0 points off the bench, 24.4 points per game off turnovers, 13.6 second-chance points and 11.6 fast break points per game.
