CONTRASTING STYLES COLLIDE WEDNESDAY AT THE CONVO: Fresh off a 70-62 victory over Ball State University, the Eastern Michigan University women's basketball team remains at home Wednesday, Jan. 12, for a Mid-American Conference West Division showdown against instate rival Central Michigan University. Game time is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. inside the Convocation Center.
The Eagles enter the game with a mark of 11-5 (2-0 MAC) while the Chippewas are 10-4 (2-0 MAC). Eastern Michigan and Central Michigan are deadlocked with the University of Toledo in a three-way tie atop the MAC West Division.
OFFENSE VERSUS DEFENSE: How do you like your basketball? EMU and CMU could not be more different when it comes to their style of play. Eastern Michigan focuses on lock down defense, limiting the opposition to an average of 58.9 points per game while scoring 68.4 points. Meanwhile, Central Michigan likes to light up the nets to a tune of 85.5 points per game while giving up 73.1 points.
The Eagles rank 75th nationally in scoring defense and 100th in scoring offense, while the Chippewas are first in scoring offense and 317th in scoring defense. CMU has reached 90-or-more points in a game five times with EMU yet to score more than 89 points in a single contest.
THE ALL-TIME SERIES: Wednesday's contest marks the 66th meeting between the Central Michigan Chippewas and Eastern Michigan Eagles, who first met during the 1976-77 season. CMU leads the overall series, 35-30, but EMU has won 17 of the last 20 meetings dating back to the 2000-01 campaign.
A LOOK BACK AT THE LAST MEETING: It was an instant classic at the Rose Center, however, it was Eastern Michigan on the short side of the 113-107 double-overtime decision at Central Michigan, Feb. 20, 2010. The contest, which featured 40 lead changes and 24 ties, saw the Eagles and Chippewas combine for 220 points to break the Mid-American Conference record for most combined points in a league contest. The previous standard of 214 points in a 121-93 victory by Bowling Green over Kent State, Feb. 23, 1991, had stood for 19 seasons.
It also marked the first time in EMU history both teams had scored more than 100 points, and it bested the 191 combined points between EMU (93) and BGSU (98) in another double overtime thriller, ironically exactly 11 years to the date, Feb. 20, 1999, at Anderson Arena in Bowling Green, Ohio.
Defense for both teams was at a premium, with the teams exchanging scores nearly every trip down the court. Eastern Michigan finished the contest 37-of-77 from the field, including equaling the school record with 16 three-point field goals, for a 48.1 percent clip.
STRIVING FOR SEVEN STRAIGHT: The Eagles have strung together six consecutive victories for the first time since the 2009-10 campaign. Last year the Green and White rolled off a seven-game winning streak from Dec. 5 through Jan. 9. In total, the program has 13 winning streaks of five-or-more contests.
STARTING TO COME TOGETHER: Over the past several contests the Eagles have started to gel, winning the last six games by an average of 24.0 points per game (EMU 75.5, OPP 51.5). Eastern's field goal percentage has also started to climb, to 40.4 percent, while going to the charity stripe 189 times compared to just 98 for the opposition. The Green and White have also forced its opponents to turn the ball over an average of 26.3 times per game, while grabbing 16.5 steals per contest.
THIS DATE IN EMU HISTORY: The game on Jan. 12 will mark the 10th time the Eagles will have played on that date, recording a 5-4 record all-time. The last occurrence came in 2008 when the Green and White downed the University of Toledo, 71-67, at the EMU Convocation Center.
ON THE HORIZON: Things do not get any easier for EMU this weekend, as the Eagles host MAC West preseason favorite Toledo at the Convocation Center. Tipoff is scheduled for 12:07 p.m. with SportsTime Ohio televising the game regionally. Saturday's contest marks the 62nd meeting between Toledo and Eastern Michigan, who first met during the 1977-1978 season. The Rockets lead the overall series, 38-23. However, the Eagles have won seven of the last 10 meetings, as well as winning seven of the last eight contests played inside the confines of the Convocation Center.
A NEW STANDARD FOR FREE THROWS ATTEMPTED: With her 12-for-12 performance from the free throw line versus Northern Illinois, Jan. 5, senior Cassie Schrock became the Eastern Michigan career leader – both men and women – in free throws attempted in a career. Schrock has attempted 645 charity tosses, besting Nikki Knapp's (2002-06) total of 626.
Schrock also holds the EMU record for career made free throws with 472. Schrock ranks 10th in Mid-American Conference annals in attempts and 15th in makes. Ohio's Caroline Mast (1982-86) holds both conference records with 635 makes in 848 attempts. For the complete MAC free throw record book, turn to page 8 of these notes.
