EASTERN RENEWS THE RIVALRY WITH BALL STATE SATURDAY: The Eastern Michigan University women's basketball team welcomes Ball State University to the Convocation Center Saturday afternoon, Jan. 8, for a Mid-American Conference West Division contest. The opening tip is scheduled for 2 p.m.
Eastern Michigan enters the game with a mark of 10-5 after cruising to a 79-63 victory over Northern Illinois University in DeKalb, Ill., Jan. 5. The Cardinals are 5-9 on the season after having dropped six of their last seven games, including a 63-43 road setback at the University of Toledo, Jan. 5.
ALL-TIME VERSUS THE CARDINALS: Saturday's contest marks the 61st meeting between the Cardinals and Eagles, who first played during the 1979-80 season. Eastern Michigan leads the series, 33-27, including sweeping the 2009-10 season series.
STARTING TO COME TOGETHER: Over the past several contests the Eagles have started to gel, winning the last five games by an average of 27.2 points per game (EMU 76.6, OPP 49.4). Eastern's field goal percentage has also started to climb, to 39.0 percent, while going to the charity stripe 166 times compared to just 89 for the opposition. The Green and White have also forced its opponents to turn the ball over an average of 26.2 times per game, while grabbing 16.2 steals per contest.
WINDOW DOMINANCE: The Eagles have out-rebounded their last two opponents by an average of 17.0, boosting their season rebounding margin to +2.5.
A NEW STANDARD FOR FREE THROWS ATTEMPTED: With her 12-for-12 performance from the free throw line versus Northern Illinois, Jan 5, senior Cassie Schrock became the Eastern Michigan career leader – both men or women – in free throws attempted in a career. Schrock has attempted 634 charity tosses, besting Nikki Knapp's (2002-06) total of 626. Schrock also holds the EMU record for career made free throws with 467.
Schrock ranks 10th in Mid-American Conference annals in attempts and 15th in makes. Ohio's Caroline Mast (1982-86) holds both conference records with 635 makes in 848 attempts. For the complete MAC free throw record book, turn to page 8 of these notes.
CRASHING THE BOARDS: Senior Kristin Thomas has established herself as a formidable rebounder. Thomas had at least six caroms in eight of her 15 games this season, and she already has four double-figure rebounding performances (10 at UMKC, 10 vs. Detroit, 10 vs. UIC, 12 at Northern Illinois). Forty-five of her 89 total rebounds have come on the offensive glass, including a season-high eight against the Titans.
IT'S RAINING THREES!: After struggling from beyond 19 feet-9 inches to open the season, the tide has changed for the Eagles. EMU made 60-of-239 three-point shots in the season's opening 13 games, before unleashing a three-point barrage versus Niagara, Dec. 28, and Northern Illinois, Jan. 5. In those two contests, EMU shot a blistering 22-of-44 for a 50.0 percent clip.
Additionally, EMU's 10 triples versus the Purple Eagles broke a streak of 19 games since the Eagles last reached double-digits in three-point field goals made. The last time EMU notched more than 10 treys was in a double-overtime thriller at Central Michigan, Feb. 20, 2010, when the squad equalled a school-record with 16.
LONG ROAD BREAK: The Jan. 5 game at Northern Illinois marked the first time in 33 days the Eagles had played a game away from the friendly confines of the Convocation Center.
ON THE HORIZON: Wednesday's contest marks the 66th meeting between the Central Michigan Chippewas and Eastern Michigan Eagles, who first met during the 1976-77 season. CMU leads the overall series, 35-30, but EMU has won 17 of the last 20 meetings dating back to the 2000-01 campaign.
THIS DATE IN EMU HISTORY: The game on Jan. 8 will mark the 11th time the Eagles will have played on that date, recording a 6-4 record all-time. The last occurrence came in 2005 when the Green and White were downed by Northern Illinois University, 55-53, at the EMU Convocation Center.
CHECKING THE CAREER STATS: With her 13 made free throws versus Cal State Northridge, Nov. 21, senior Cassie Schrock became the EMU career leader in made free throws with 417. Nikki Knapp (2002-06) held the previous standard of 411 makes.
Junior Tavelyn James moved into second place all-time with 550 three-pointers attempted, 28 shots short of Kristy Maska's (1997-01) record of 578 in a career. James has also made 169 triples, which passed Alyssa Pittman (2006-08) for the fourth-most made three-pointers in the program history.
