BACK HOME WEDNESDAY FOR THE BOBCATS: The Eastern Michigan University women's basketball team returns home Wednesday, Jan. 26, for a Mid-American Conference cross divisional showdown against Ohio University. Game time is scheduled for 7:07 p.m. inside the Convocation Center.
Eastern Michigan enters the game with a 13-7 (4-2 MAC) record, after holding on for a hard-fought 56-51 road victory at the University of Akron, Jan. 22. The Bobcats are 6-13 (2-4 MAC) and have won their last two contests, including a 69-56 win at Miami University, Jan. 18, and a 60-54 victory over Western Michigan University, Jan. 22.
THE ALL-TIME SERIES: The Jan. 26 contest marks the 51st meeting between the Ohio Bobcats and Eastern Michigan Eagles, who first met during the 1980-81 season. Ohio leads the series, 30-20, with EMU posting a 56-53 victory in the team's only meeting last season back in Athens, Ohio, Jan. 27, 2010.
FINDING THE GAME ON YOUR RADIO DIAL: With the EMU men's basketball team on the road for a game at Ohio University Wednesday night, the women's contest will only be broadcast on Eagle All-Access rather than WEMU (89.1 FM). Ryan Wooley will have the call beginning at 6:50 p.m. from the Convocation Center. As always, on demand replays of most EMU basketball games are available to subscribers at EMUEagles.com/showcase.
TIES WITH THE BOBCATS: The EMU-Ohio game will mark the fifth time Head Coach AnnMarie Gilbert has squared off versus the Bobcats. Gilbert began her collegiate career at Ohio University, playing two seasons (1986-88) before transferring to Oberlin College. She transferred to Oberlin for her junior and senior seasons (1989-91), where she was a two-time Kodak first team All-American, a two-time NCAC Player of the Year, the Honda Division III Athlete of the Year. Additionally, Gilbert and Ohio's Head Coach Semeka Randall worked together as assistant coaches at Michigan State University from 2005-07.
NCAA RANKINGS: The latest NCAA Statistical Rankings came out on Jan. 23 and the Eagles are 11th in the nation (out of 333 eligible teams) in steals per game at 13.1. They are 24th in turnover margin at +5.0 and 61st in three-point field goal defense made per game at 28.6 percent. Individually, Sydney Huntley is 41st in the nation with an average of 2.8 steals rebounds per game. Tavelyn James is 43rd in the nation in scoring with an average of 17.6 points per game, and Cassie Schrock is 41st in the nation in assists with an average of 5.5 per game.
SURVIVAL IN AKRON: Six consecutive free throws by junior Tavelyn James over the final 40 seconds sealed EMU's 56-51 victory over Akron, Jan. 22, at James A. Rhodes Arena in Akron, Ohio. The Eagles, who held the lead for most of the ballgame, placed three players in double figures but had to survive a late Zips rally to escape with the Mid-American Conference cross-divisional win.
In the victory, the Eagles set or equalled season-bests in three-pointers attempted (25), offensive rebounds (28), total rebounds (54) and field goals attempted (70). However, all was not rosy, as the Eagles managed a season-low 22.9 percent (16-of-70) field goal clip. The total is the lowest for an EMU squad since the 1999-2000 campaign when the statistical category began to be tracked in the EMU record book.
JAMES BECOMES THE EMU CAREER LEADER FOR THREE-POINTERS ATTEMPTED: With seven three-pointers attempted at Akron, Jan. 22, junior Tavelyn James became the EMU career leader in three-point field goals attempted. James has tossed up 580 three-pointers, making 177 of those shots. Kristy Maska (1997-01) made 215 of her 578 career three-pointers for the previous EMU long range shot record. Given James' current pace, she will shatter the Mid-American Conference standard for three-pointers attempted, bypassing Toledo's Mimi Olson (1992-96), who rose up for 711.
PICKING UP MAC VICTORY No. 200: With its victory Saturday, Jan. 23, Eastern Michigan picked up its 200th Mid-American Conference victory in EMU's 30th season of league competition. The Eagles hold a 200-270 record against conference foes and have posted winning seasons in the MAC in nine of the last 10 campaigns. EMU has had the most success against Northern Illinois, going 25-9, and the least versus Bowling Green, 14-43. Western Michigan has been the Green and White's most frequent opponent with 68 meetings while Buffalo holds the distinction of the fewest conference games against the Eagles with 17.
EAGLES VERSUS THE EAST DIVISION: The 2010-11 season is the sixth utilizing the current Mid-American Conference scheduling format for women's basketball. Each of the 12 schools opens league action with five divisional games, followed by six cross-divisional games and then five more divisional contests to close the regular season.
Eastern Michigan has posted a 26-21 record versus MAC East Division opponents since the 2004-05 campaign. Eastern is 1-0 this season after finishing 4-4 last season. The Green and White were 2-5 in cross-divisional games in 2008-09, 4-3 in 2007-08, 4-4 in 2006-07, 6-2 in 2005-06 and 5-3 in 2004-05.
