YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) — The Eastern Michigan University women's basketball team raced to a double-digit first-half lead and never looked back in an 85-40 win over a visiting Ohio University team here Wednesday evening, Jan. 26, 2011, in a Mid-American Conference cross-divisional game in the Convocation Center.

The Eagles, now 5-2 in MAC play and 14-7 overall, blistered the nets for 71 percent from the field in the first half, hitting 22-of-31 shots for a 28-point advantage at intermission, the third-best first half effort of the season. That early lead enabled the Eagles to cruise in the second half to record the victory.

All 13 Eastern players hit the scoring column led by senior guard Sydney Huntley (Cincinnati, Ohio-Purcell Marian) with 14 points while junior guard Tavelyn James (Detroit, Mich.-Mumford) adding 12 points. Freshman Natachia Watkins (South Euclid, Ohio-Brush) and senior De'Ja Wills (Anderson, Ind.-Anderson) added eight points each. Senior Cassie Schrock (Wadsworth, Ohio-Wadsworth) led EMU with eight rebounds.

The Eagles connected on 38-of-61 field-goal attempts for 62.3 percent while holding Ohio to 24 percent on 12-of-50 shots. Ohio won the battle of the boards, 35-32.

Ohio, which falls to 2-5 in MAC action and 6-14 overall, was led by Alesia Howard with 13 points and Kamille Buckner chipped in 10.

Shavon Robinson gave the Bobcats a quick 2-0 lead with a layup at the 19:06 mark, and the visitors would take a 4-2 lead a minute later only to see the home squad rip off 14 unanswered points for a 16-4 lead with 13:48 left in the first half.

The Eagles kept that fast-break offense running to increase its lead to as many as 28 points at halftime. A total of nine players scored for EMU in the first 20 minutes with Huntley leading the way with 10.

The Eastern defense was just as effective as the offense, forcing 17 Bobcat turnovers in the first half while limiting the visitors to just 20 percent from the field on 5-of-25 shooting.

James kept things moving at the start of the second half, hitting a quick triple and the Eagles would keep their lead in the 20s throughout most of the remainder of the game.

Eastern will now travel to Oxford, Ohio Saturday, Jan. 29, for a 2 p.m. game against the Miami RedHawks. The game is scheduled to be televised live on the Ohio News Network (ONN).
