OXFORD, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) –– The Eastern Michigan University women's basketball team survived a second-half rally to escape with a 72-62 victory over Miami University Saturday afternoon, Jan. 29, at Millett Hall. The RedHawks used a 16-2 run midway through the second period to cut the deficit to just two points with 6:43 to play, but the Eagles answered with a 16-8 run of their own to close the game and secure the victory.

With the decision EMU ups its record to 15-7 overall and 6-2 in league action, while Miami falls to 10-11 and 2-5 in the MAC.

Junior guard Tavelyn James (Detroit, Mich.-Mumford) turned in a game-best 24 points on 8-of-20 shooting, including a pair of clutch free throws with 47 seconds to play to help ice the win. Senior Cassie Schrock (Wadsworth,Ohio-Wadsworth) turned in her usual workman performance with 18 points, seven rebounds and five assists in 40 minutes of action. Junior Paige Redditt (Kansas City, Mo.-Belton) finished with 10 points and freshman Desyree Thomas (Waterford, Mich.-Mott) added a career-best six steals for the stingy Eagle defense.

Kirsten Olowinski posted a double-double with 10 points and a game-high 17 rebounds, while Maggie Boyer paced the RedHawks with 19 points and Courtney Osborn tallied 16 points and six rebounds.

After a slow start to the contest for both sides, the offensive fireworks began with three consecutive three-pointers by Boyer to give the RedHawks a 14-11 advantage with 11:43 to in the opening frame. The lead would see-saw back-and-fourth with Olowinski knotting the contest, 16-16, on a pair of free throws at the 7:42 mark.

However, from there Eastern's offense opened a 10-1 Eagle run that was keyed by James scoring eight points off back-to-back treys and a layup to make it 26-16 at 5:55 mark.

The RedHawks would get no closer than six points the rest of the period, first at 4:40 off a pair of Boyer free throws and then with 23 seconds as Boyer drained another trey. Schrock sank a pair of free throws with five second remaining in the stanza to send EMU into the lockerroom with a 39-31 advantage.

Following the break, Eastern would push the margin to as many as 16. Trailing by 14 points, 56-42, with 11:51 Miami went on a 12-0 run to close the gap to two, 56-54, with 6:54 to play. Osborn had five points during the surge, while Olowinski ignited the rally with three free throws. Redditt finally ended the EMU five-minute scoring drought with 5:52 to play with a layup with 5:53 to play.

The Green and White extended its lead to six, 62-56, at 5:13, but a prompt Lillian Pitts layup with 4:30 to go to again cut the deficit to four. Miami would get as close as five down the stretch before the Eagles hot free throws down the stretch to pull out the 10-point decision.

The Eagles remain on the road Wednesday, Feb. 2, with a trip to Kent State University. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. at the Memorial Athletic and Convocation Center. Dan Gutowsky will call the action on Eagle All-Access with the pregame show beginning at 6:50 p.m.
