AKRON, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) –– Six consecutive free throws by junior Tavelyn James (Detroit, Mich.-Mumford) over the final 40 seconds sealed the Eastern Michigan University women's basketball team's 56-51 victory over the University at Akron Saturday afternoon, Jan. 22, at James A. Rhodes Arena. The Eagles, who held the lead for most of the ballgame, placed three players in double figures but had to survive a late Zips rally to escape with the Mid-American Conference cross-divisional win.

With the decision EMU ups its record to 13-7 overall and 4-2 in league action, while UA falls to 8-10 and 1-5 in the MAC.

James led the Eagles with 17 points on 4-of-11 shooting to go along with 12 points from senior guard Sydney Huntley (Cincinnati, Ohio-Purcell Marian). Senior Cassie Schrock (Wadsworth,Ohio-Wadsworth) also chipped in 10 points on the afternoon, going 8-for-14 at the free throw stripe.

With her seven three-point field goal attempts, became the EMU career leader in three-point field goals attempted, passing Kristy Maska (1997-01), who made 215 of her 578 career three-pointers for the current EMU long range shot records.

Sophomore Rachel Tecca paced Akron with 19 points to go along with 18 rebounds in a losing effort. No other Zip reached double figures in points, as they shot just 31 percent (15-of-51) for the contest and 1-of-16 from the long line.

Eastern Michigan struggled shooting just 22.9 percent for the game, but grabbed a season-best 54 rebounds Twenty-eight of those caroms came on the offenseive glass, leading to 21 second-chance points.

Eastern jumped out to a quick 9-4 edge to open the contest with James and Huntley combining for eight points. Offensive rebounding proved to be a major factor for both squads, with the Green and White converting for six second-chance points to push the advantage to 17-9 with 12:15 showing on the first half clock.

Akron would promptly cut into the deficit with a 6-0 run of its own to pull within a pair, 17-15, after Ti'eshia Stubbs converted on just one of her two free throw tosses at the 9:32 mark.

Just as quickly though, Eastern's defense would stiffen to holding Akron without a field goal for the remainder of the period. Meanwhile, the Eagles' offense exploded for 10 of the next 12 points with Huntley hitting a triple with 4:04 showing to give EMU a 10-point advantage, 27-17.

Carly Young added a free-throw for the Zips at the 3:50 mark, but the run continued for Eastern as James drilled a three-pointer and Natachia Watkins (South Euclid, Ohio-Brush) added a offensive stick-back to send Eastern Michigan into the halftime break with a 32-18 edge.

Huntley led all scorers in the frame with 12 points on 4-of-7 shooting from three point range, as EMU connected on seven triples in the half. Rachel Tecca notched five points and 10 boards to key the Zips.

The Zips finally ended their 14 minute field goal drought with 3:28 gone in the second half, as Jasmine Mushington had a runner in the lane drop to make it 35-21. The scoring would slow for both sides, however, Akron would try to chip away with our straight points from Tecca to pull within 12, 39-27.

Akron would turn the tables on Eastern, holding the Eagles without a field goal for more than 10 minutes, until Wills laid a shot off the glass with 4:52 left to play. However, the Blue and Gold quickly answered with an old-fashion three-point play by Tecca to make it 47-40.

Two more Tecca charity tosses at the 3:24 mark made it 47-42, but Schrock quickly answered with her only field goal of the contest to get the lead back to seven points.

Akron would get as close as three, 54-51, with 15 seconds to play, but James would go a perfect 6-for-6 with under a minute to play to help secure the hard-fought victory.

The Eagles return home to the friendly confines of the Convocation Center Wednesday, Jan. 26, to host Ohio University. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. Ryan Wooley and Greg Steiner will call the action on Eagle All-Access with the pregame show beginning at 6:50 p.m.
