KALAMAZOO, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) —The Eastern Michigan University women's basketball team picked up a 67-56 Mid-American Conference road victory over the Broncos of Western Michigan University Wednesday evening, Jan. 19, here at University Arena.

With the win, the Eagles move to 12-7 (3-2 MAC), while WMU falls to 5-13 (1-4 MAC) on the year.

The Eagles' offensive attack was paced by Tavelyn James' (Detroit, Mich.-Mumford) 23-point performance. Senior Cassie Schrock (Wadsworth, Ohio-Wadsworth) added 20 points and seven rebounds with six steals, while De'Ja Wills (Anderson, Ind.-Anderson) chipped in shooting three-of-five from beyond the arc for nine points.

The contest proved to be a back-and-forth battle that featured eight lead changes and five ties. The Eagles shot 43.6 percent from the floor, connecting on 24-of-55 tries, while the Broncos hit 17-of-52 attempts for 32.7 percent.

EMU was the first to strike in the opening half when Schrock snagged a bad pass by WMU to set up a fast break jumper for James to put the Eagles up 2-0. Sydney Huntley (Cincinnati, Ohio-Purcell Marian) quickly sank two free throws after a hard foul underneath the basket to push the Green and White lead to four.

WMU's offense was unable to register any points until 3:50 into the first half with a bucket by Western's Miame Giden who tried to make it a three-point play after drawing the foul, but the Eagles grabbed the rebound and quickly converted it into two points at the other end with a layup by Schrock.

The Broncos would bring it to within two points but back-to-back assists from Wills to both Schock and James pushed the EMU advantage to six at 15-9.

After nearly 13 minutes of play, WMU would take its first lead of the game with a three-pointer to beat the shot clock by Taylor Manley, setting the score to 18-17.

EMU regained the lead after Wills hit an uncontested triple to lmake it 22-20 and would remain on top as they headed into the locker room at the end of the half, 26-25.

The Eagles would overcome a recent lull in three-point shooting after hitting five of eight attempts for a 62.5 percent effort in the second half, while maintaining a 33.3 percent mark (6-for-18) for the game.

Four minutes into the second half, the score remained deadlocked at 31 apiece until the Eagles soared to a 10-0 run that started with two successful free throws by James. Schrock then picked up her fourth assist of the evening after she dished the ball to James who hit from long range to swell the EMU lead to five. Kristin Thomas (Winter Park, Fla.-Hillsborough C.C.) laid in a quick two-points off of an offensive board and added a free throw to complete the three-point play, while James would continue the Eagles attack with a quick steal and score to help fuel ten unanswered EMU points.

With eight minutes remaining in the contest, the Broncos would cut the Eagles lead to four at 52-48, but EMU would never look back, pulling ahead by as many as 13 points en route to a 67-56 final score.

EMU will return to action Saturday, Jan. 22, when they head to Akron, Ohio to face off against the Zips in a MAC cross-divisional match up. Tip-off is slated for a 5 p.m. at the James A. Rhodes Arena.
