EASTERN MICHIGAN LOOKS TO ZIP UP AKRON SATURDAY: Fresh off a 67-56 victory over Western Michigan University, the Eastern Michigan University women's basketball team remains on the road Saturday, Jan. 22, for a Mid-American Conference cross divisional showdown against the University of Akron. Game time is scheduled for 5 p.m. inside James A. Rhodes Arena in Akron, Ohio.
Eastern Michigan enters the game with a 12-7 (3-2 MAC) record, following a victory over the instate rival Broncos, Jan. 19, in Kalamazoo. The Zips are 8-9 (1-4 MAC) and have lost five of their last six contests, including a 72-55 setback at MAC East Division leader Kent State University, Jan. 19.
GAMEDAY PART DUEX: The contest will be shown regionally on SportsTime Ohio with Jim Rosenhaus providing the play-by-play and Pat Vuyancih serving as the analyst. Additionally, the game is the first part of a doubleheader with the Akron men's basketball team, who tangle with Bowling Green State University 30 minutes following the conclusion of the women's contest.
THE ALL-TIME SERIES: The Jan. 22 contest against the University of Akron marks the 29th meeting between the Zips and Eagles, who first met during the 1981-82 season. UA leads the series, 16-12, including sweeping a pair of contests last season. The Zips posted a 73-66 victory in Ypsilanti, Jan. 30, 2010, and again got the better of the Eagles in the MAC Tournament Quarterfinal Round, 72-46, at Quicken Loans Arena in Cleveland, Ohio, March 10, 2010.
JAMES NEARING EMU CAREER MARK FOR THREE-POINTERS ATTEMPTED: Junior Tavelyn James is just six shots shy of becoming the EMU career leader in three-point field goals attempted. James has tossed up 573 three-pointers, making 174 of those shots. Kristy Maska (1997-01) made 215 of her 578 career three-pointers for the current EMU long range shot records.
Given James' currently pace, she will shatter the Mid-American Conference standard for three-pointers attempted, bypassing Toledo's Mimi Olson (1992-96), who rose up for 711.
LOOKING FOR MAC VICTORY No. 200: EMU needs a win Saturday for its 200th Mid-American Conference victory in this is EMU's 30th season of league competition. The Eagles hold a 199-270 record against conference foes and have posted winning seasons in the MAC in nine of the last 10 campaigns. EMU has had the most success against Northern Illinois, going 25-9, and the least versus Bowling Green, 14-43. Western Michigan has been the Green and White's most frequent opponent with 68 meetings while Buffalo holds the distinction of the fewest conference games against the Eagles with 17.
EAGLES VERSUS THE EAST DIVISION: The 2010-11 season is the sixth utilizing the current Mid-American Conference scheduling format for women's basketball. Each of the 12 schools opens league action with five divisional games, followed by six cross-divisional games and then five more divisional contests to close the regular season.
Eastern Michigan has posted a 25-21 record versus MAC East Division opponents since the 2004-05 campaign. Eastern finished 4-4 last season and was 2-5 in cross-divisional games in 2008-09, 4-3 in 2007-08, 4-4 in 2006-07, 6-2 in 2005-06 and 5-3 in 2004-05.
GILBERT RETURNS TO NORTHEAST OHIO: Saturday's game will be a homecoming of sorts for Head Coach AnnMarie Gilbert. A native of nearby Elyria, Ohio, Gilbert began her collegiate career at Ohio University, playing two seasons (1986-88) before transferring to Oberlin College. She transferred to Oberlin for her junior and senior seasons (1989-91), where she was a two-time Kodak first team All-American, a two-time NCAC Player of the Year, the Honda Division III Athlete of the Year and the Champion USA/WBCA Player of the Year in 1991.
THIS DATE IN EMU HISTORY: The game on Jan. 22 will mark the 13th time the Eagles will have played on that date, recording a 7-5 record all-time. The last occurrence came in 2005 when the Green and White downed Ohio University, 93-61, at the EMU Convocation Center.
ON THE HORIZON: The Jan. 26 contest marks the 51st meeting between the Ohio Bobcats and Eastern Michigan Eagles, who first met during the 1980-81 season. Ohio leads the series, 30-20, with EMU posting a 56-53 victory in the team's only meeting last season back in Athens, Ohio, Jan. 27, 2009.
THREE-BALLS, TRIPLES OR TRI-LIGHTERS: No matter what you call it, the three-point shot has proved to be either an hindrance or a help to the Eagles in 2010-11. Eastern Michigan has notched a 8-2 record when it connects on five-or-more threes in a contest, and conversely just 4-5 when it does not. When the three pointers are falling the offense is clicking to the tune of 74.8 points per game and a 35.3 percent (71-of-202) clip. However, when struggling from long range Eastern is only averaging 60.4 points per contest and a dismal 15.7 percent (20-of-127) from the long line.
