ROCHESTER, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) -- The Eastern Michigan University volleyball team improved to 8-0 on the year with a three-set sweep over Oakland University in non-conference action Tuesday, Sept. 7, at the Athletics Center O'Rena.
The Eagles' eight match winning streak to start the 2010 season is the second-best start in school history. The program's best start came in 1990 when the then-Hurons started on a school-record 20-match winning streak. Three teams, the 1993, 2002 and 2003 squads, started 7-1.
The EMU offense, which hit a solid .310 for the match, saw sophomore Rachel Iaquaniello (Plymouth, Mich.-Dearborn Divine Child) post a near double-double with 17 kills and seven digs. Classmate Kristen Baker (Mentor, Ohio-Mentor) chipped in 10 kills of her own, with junior Ashley Mason (Eastlake, Ohio-Lake Catholic) adding 35 assists, eight digs and two kills.
For Oakland, Meghan Bray had 11 kills and five digs, with Allison Bell recording seven kills. Setter Ashley Nevelle had 17 assists on the night as the Golden Grizzlies played 16 players.
EMU set the tone for the night in the first set, quickly racing out to an 11-6 advantage on a kill by Iaquaniello. Following an OU timeout, the margin grew to eight, 21-13, off an attack error by Jenna Lange. Eastern would seal the 25-16 victory with a marker by freshman Erin Short (Orrville, Ohio-Orrville).
The second set was a back-and-fourth battle that was deadlocked at 7-7 until a quick 4-0 spurt by EMU forced OU to burn a timeout. With the momentum clearly in its favor, the Green and White would never look back en route to the 25-16 decision.
Eastern roared out to the six point edge at 10-4, in the finale, however this time Oakland would chip away to pull within a pair, 17-15, on a Mason ball handling error. Head Coach Kim Berrington called a timeout to calm her team, who was playing its fourth match in five days.
The talk had some impact with the margin soaring back up to four, 21-17, making Oakland use its final timeout. Seven plays later a service ace by Iaquaniello sent everyone home with EMU posting the 25-20 win.
Eastern Michigan now heads north to the Spartan Invitational, Sept. 10-11, in East Lansing, Mich. The Eagles will square off against Eastern Illinois University, Clemson University and Michigan State University. All matches as MSU will take place at Jenison Field House.
