Volleyball Continues Its Winning Ways Against EIU

EAST LANSING, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University volleyball team pushed its record to a perfect 9-0 with a 3-0 sweep (25-22, 25-18, 25-21) of Eastern Illinois University Friday afternoon, Sept. 10, in the opener of the Spartan Invitation here at Jenison Field House. Sophomore outside hitter Rachel Iaquaniello (Plymouth, Mich.-Dearborn Divine Child) powered down 14 kills in the victory.
The Eagles' nine match winning streak to start the 2010 season is the second-best start in school history. The program's best start came in 1990 when the then-Hurons started on a school-record 20-match winning streak.
The EMU offense, which hit a solid .266 for the match, saw six Eagles post at least five kills on the afternoon. Behind Iaquaniello, freshman Paige Roback (Maumee, Ohio-Notre Dame Academy) added nine kills and 15 digs, while sophomore Kristen Baker (Mentor, Ohio-Mentor) chipped in seven kills of her own. Junior setter Ashley Mason (Eastlake, Ohio-Lake Catholic) nearly finished with a triple-double adding 34 assists, 10 digs and eight kills.
For the Panthers, Kelsey Orr had 12 kills and eight digs, with Alex Zwettler recording seven kills. Setter Chrissie Albers had 33 assists on the day as EIU hit .183 for the match.
Eastern closes out the Spartan Invitation Saturday against Clemson University and host Michigan State University.
