EAST LANSING, Mich. (EMUEagles.com)
– The Eastern Michigan University women's soccer team dropped its first match of the season in a 4-0 decision to Michigan State University on the road at DeMartin Stadium Friday evening, Sept. 3.

Two-time All-American Laura Heyboer led a potent MSU attack as she added a goal and an assist in leading the Spartans to the win. It was a constant battle offensively for EMU as it was out-shot 30-6 in the match. With the loss, EMU drops to 2-1-1 on the season while MSU moves to 3-1 this year.

Of the six shots issued by the Eagles, just three applied pressure to MSU goalkeeper Jill Flietstra. Maggie Christiensen (Orland Park, Ill.-AA Stagg), Cara Cutaia (Burlington, Ontario-Notre Dame Catholic) and Stephanie Clarke (London, Ontario-St. Thomas Aquinas) each found opportunities, but neither of them could convert.

In the 61st minute, the two-time All-American, Heyboer, seemingly put the match out of reach for the Eagles, adding her second goal of the season and second in as many games. She used a nice through-ball into the box that was started off a steal near midfield. Heyboer then used her left boot to place the ball into the left upper-90 out of the reach of EMU goalie Monique Budani (Whitby, Ontario-Sinclair Secondary). Mikki Dennis and Kelsey Kassab would add goals thereafter to put the game even further out of hand.

The Spartans took a 1-0 lead into halftime after a two-on-two breakaway led to Olivia Stander's second goal of the season in the 29th minute. Heyboer added her second assist of the year as her pass allowed Stander a clear view of the goal with a 10-yard chip shot.

Budani made a career-high 17 saves on the night, but MSU's first half goal ended her consecutive scoreless minutes streak at 253 minutes and denied her the chance at a third straight shutout. It was the first goal allowed by the Eagles since their game at Michigan on Aug. 22.

She will look to begin a new streak as the Eagles host their long-awaited home opener against Detroit-Mercy Tuesday, Sept. 7 at Scicluna Field. Kickoff is slated for 4 p.m.
