The EMU women's soccer team dropped its home opener to Detroit, 1-0, at Scicluna Field

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – A heartbreaking goal in the 95th minute brought upon the Eastern Michigan University women's soccer team a disappointing, 1-0, loss to the Detroit Titans in the home opener at Scicluna Field Tuesday, Sept. 7.
The Eagles and Titans battled through 90 minutes of regulation amidst a blistering wind without either team finding the net until Detroit's Abby McCollum snuck a shot inside the upper right corner of the goal just five minutes into the first overtime session for her third score of the year. With the loss, EMU falls to 2-2-1 overall while Detroit moves to 3-2-1 on the young season.
The Titans managed 20 shots (10 on goal) to the Eagles' five (two on goal) during the match. EMU saw its two opportunities fall to the wayside as Paige Sheridan (Farmington Hills, Mich.-Mercy) and Stephanie Clarke (London, Ontario-St. Thomas Aquinas) each had close range shots denied by Detroit keeper, Nora Abolins.
Eastern Michigan and Detroit came into today's match having played to scoreless ties in each of its prior two meetings. Before the goal by McCollum, both teams had strung together 319 consecutive scoreless minutes against each other dating back to 2007. The Eagles have now been held scoreless for more than 200 minutes and were shutout for a second consecutive time. It's the first time that has happened since Sept. 2-5, 2008.
Senior goalkeeper Monique Budani (Whitby, Ontario-Sinclair Secondary) made nine saves in the loss. She is now just 24 saves from tying the EMU all-time mark of 312 career saves, held by Nikki Allen ('04).
The Eagles will hit the road for another four-game road trip beginning with Valparaiso Friday, Sept. 10, at 7 p.m.
