SCOUTING THE SPARTANS: Michigan State enters Friday's match against the Eagles with a 2-1 overall record, opening the season with a 1-0 shutout of St. John's before falling to No. 1 North Carolina, 3-0, in the second game of the Aggieland Invitational at Texas A&M. The Spartans' home debut came last weekend with a 1-0 victory over Western Michigan. MSU captured each win by 1-0 scores with each goal coming off the foot of Laura Heyboer and Olivia Stander. Megan Pines and Annie Steinlage each have an assist while Jill Flietstra has two shutouts to her credit in three starts this season. She owns a 1.00 GAA and .842 save percentage.
LAST TIME OUT: The Eagles ventured to the Land of Lincoln and returned home with two well-deserved, 1-0, shutouts over Illinois State and Eastern Illinois. EMU used an early penalty kick, converted by Stephanie Janssens, to secure the win over ISU. Against EIU, Stephanie Pilarski scored her first career goal to give Monique Budani all she needed to record her second straight shutout and first-ever Player of the Week award.
MEASURING UP THE BRASS: Now in his 12th season at the helm, Eastern Michigan Head Coach Scott Hall has pushed his career record to 118-81-32 (.580) and seeks his second career NCAA tournament appearance after taking the Eagles to the big dance in 1999. For the Spartans, Tom Saxton is in his 20th season and boasts a 181-153-30 (.538) overall record and is coming off back-to-back NCAA Tournament appearances in 2008 and 2009. The last time the Eagles defeated MSU was Sept. 3, 1999 by a score of 1-0 in East Lansing.
BUDANI NETS FIRST CAREER MAC POW AWARD: Senior goalie Monique Budani was named Mid-American Conference Defensive Player of the Week last week after blanking both opponents, Eastern Illinois and Illinois State, and pushing her scoreless minutes streak to 224 minutes. The Whitby, Ontario native has a 0.31 GAA and a .955 save percentage this season. Her two shutouts this season gives her 18 for her career, just six shy of EMU's all-time leader, Sarah Willis, who has 24.
ROAD WRAP-UP: The Green and White head to East Lansing to take on Michigan State Friday, Sept. 3, to wrap up a very challenging four-game road trip to start the season. After drawing even with Michigan, the Eagles captured victories over Illinois State and Eastern Illinois and hope to make it three in a row against MSU. Their long awaited home opener will be Tuesday, Sept. 7, versus Detroit at Scicluna Field at 4 p.m.
