Soccer Shuts Down Eastern Illinois, 1-0

CHARLESTON, Ill. (EMUEagles.com) – Freshman Stephanie Pilarski (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.-Marian) scored her first career goal to lead the Eastern Michigan University women's soccer team to a 1-0 victory over Eastern Illinois University here Sunday, Aug. 29, at Lakeside Field. Senior Monique Budani (Whitby, Ontario-Sinclair) was again sensational in goal, stopping seven shots to earn her second shutout of the weekend and the 18th of her career.
With the victory the Eagles improve to 2-0-1 while the Panthers fall to 2-2.
The Green and White have now strung together 224 consecutive minutes without allowing a goal dating back to the 66th minute of the season-opener against the University of Michigan, Aug. 22.
The Eagles snapped the Panthers' 14 consecutive home games streak without a shutout that dated back to the 2008 campaign and their nine-game unbeaten streak at home (6-0-3). Additionally, Eastern Michigan has now won five consecutive games in Charleston, Ill..
The game's first corner kick opportunity did not come until the 71st minute but EMU capitalized on it, scoring the lone goal of the day. Pilarski placed the ball perfectly in top right corner of the net after fellow freshman Julie Maheu (Oakville, Ontario-Holy Trinity) flicked a Stephanie Janssens (Novi, Mich.-Novi) corner kick.
Eastern Illinois had three quality scoring chances early in the second half but were unable to convert. The homestanding Panthers enjoyed a 14-11 edge in shots, putting eight on goal. Budani made seven saves in net and junior defender Amanda Marsh (Dexter, Mich.-Dexter) cleared a shot by Kristin Germann off the goal line in the 49th minute.
Kaylin Lorbert made five saves in goal for the Panthers but had to leave the game in the 84th minute after taking the worst of a three-player collision. Jessica Taldone finished out the game. Lorbert made a pair of nice saves in the first half to keep the game scoreless.
Eastern Michigan closes out its four-match road swing Friday, Sept. 4, against Big Ten Conference foe Michigan State University. Game time is set for 5 p.m. in East Lansing, Mich.
