ATHENS, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University women's swimming and diving team fell by the narrowest of margins Saturday, February 6, as Ohio University finished second and third in the day's final event to pull out the slim, 151-149, victory at home in Mid-American Conference action.
The Eagles 'B' team swam to a comfortable five-second win in the 800-yard free relay, but Ohio was able to grab second and third place while the Eagles' 'A' team finished fourth. The pair of top-three finishes for the 'Cats enabled them to pull out the two-point dual meet victory. It was their seventh straight dual meet win and 18th in a row at home.
Despite the loss, the Eagles had a solid day overall, winning nine of the 16 total events during the meet. Briana Emig and Sarah Maraskine each won two individual events and contributed in the 800-yard free relay team's victory in the day's final event.
Emig's first win of the day was in the 1,000-yard free where she touched the wall in 10:13.94, finishing six seconds ahead of Ohio's Amanda Traylor. The freshman also added a victory in the 500-yard free and a fifth place finish in the 200-yard free.
Maraskine turned in wins in both the 100- and 200-yard backstroke, finishing ahead of the 'Cats' Sarah Owens in both events. She was also on the second place finishing 200-yard medley relay, swimming the opening leg before Chelsea Allard, Samantha Nameth and Sarah Kowalski finished it off.
Kowalski also placed first in the 100-yard free and was a member of the winning 800-yard free relay team as well. She turned in a third place finish in the 50-yard free. Elisa Torres added a win in the 200-yard butterfly while Leslie Vizzuraga turned in first and second place finishes in the one and three-meter dives, respectively.
The Eagles will now have off until the MAC Championships which will take place at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio Feb. 24-27.
