YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) - The Eastern Michigan University women's swimming and diving team heads into the 2010 MAC Championships with the hopes of improving upon its fourth place finish from last season. The Eagles are aiming for their third overall title in school history.

FOR THE 34TH TIME: The 2009-10 season marks the 34th in Eastern Michigan University women's swimming and diving history. The program was started in 1976 under Head Coach Mike Cook who led the Eagles to a 5-3-1 mark in their inaugural year. EMU has had eight coaches throughout the years, with Peter Linn taking over in 2004. As women's coach, Linn has helped the Eagles to two Mid-American Conference Championships while boasting a 46-18 overall record and a 32-14 MAC mark in now his sixth season.

CHAMPIONSHIP TIME: Eastern Michigan University is gearing up for the 2010 MAC Championships and eyeing its third overall title in school history. The last time the Eagles hoisted the trophy was 2007 when they repeated as MAC Champions. This year, Miami University will host the MAC Championship meet for the first time since 2004. The RedHawks who rank second in the CSCAA Mid-Major Poll, the highest of any MAC team, will be comfortably competing in their own backyard.

CHAMPIONSHIP PROSPECTS: The Eagles' strengths heading into this weekend are most certainly their distance freestyle events as freshman Briana Emig and sophomore Samantha Partridge, who was a second team All-MAC selection last year, hold top-five MAC times this season in the 500, 1,000 and 1,650 between them. Sophomore Sarah Maraskine will contend in backstroke while several Eagles are looking to place high in both diving events, including freshman Danielle Hulvey.

LAST TIME OUT: The Eagles were edged out by Ohio University in the regular season finale in Athens Feb. 6, 2010. EMU was trailing going into the final event of the meet, the 800-yard free relay, but still had a chance to come away with the win. The Eagles 'B' team swam to a comfortable five-second win in the event, but Ohio was able to grab second and third place while the Eagles' 'A' team finished fourth. The pair of top-three finishes for the 'Cats enabled them to pull out the two-point, 151-149, dual meet victory. It was the 'Cats seventh straight dual meet win and 18th in a row at home.
