YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University women's basketball team led wire-to-wire to record a 78-72 win over Kent State University here Saturday, Feb. 6, in a Mid-American Conference cross-divisional game in the Convocation Center.

The EMU win snapped a five-game Kent State winning streak and leaves the Eagles, second in the MAC West, with a 17-5 overall record and a 7-3 league mark.  Kent, which entered the game tied for second in the East Division, falls to 14-8 overall and 7-3 league in league play.

Sophomore guard Tavelyn James (Detroit, Mich.-Mumford), led the Eagles in scoring with 19 while junior guard Cassie Schrock (Wadsworth, Ohio-Wadsworth) scored 15, with junior guard Sydney Huntley (Cincinnati, Ohio-Purcell Marian) and sophomore forward  Paige Redditt (Kansas City, Mo.-Belton) adding  12 each.

Junior forward Taisja Jones led Kent State with 21 while junior guard Jamilah Humes, a product of Saginaw Arthur Hill High School, scored 17 and senior forward Yoshica Spears added 12.

The Eagles were hot from the field, shooting 51.9 percent on 27-of-52 attempts while the EMU defense held Kent to just 37.9 from the field (22-of-58 attempts).  Kent State held a decided 43-33 rebound advantage.

The Eagles raced out to a quick lead to start the game, going up 10-5 with 14:35 on the clock.

Eastern would build on that early five-point advantage and push it to nine, 33-24, on two Schrock free throws at the 1:59 mark.

James would hit a huge three from the right corner at the buzzer to give the Eagles a 38-26 halftime lead.  James and Redditt totaled seven points each in the first 20 minutes while Kent was led by Stephanie Gibson with seven.

Eastern connected on 14-of-31 shots from the field in the first half for a 45.2 percent effort while holding Kent to just 27.6 percent on 8-of-29 field-goal attempts.

The Eagles kept the offensive surge going in the second half, running to an 18-point lead, 62-44, after Huntley hit a three followed quickly by a fast-break layup with 11:47 left in the game.

Kent State would pick up the pace from that point, however, cutting Eastern's edge to seven, 63-56, with 7:56 left on a layup by Humes.

The Golden Flashes would continue to close the gap, getting within three points several times late in the game, but the Eagles withstood all of those challenges to notch the six-point win.

The Eagles will stay home for a Wednesday, Feb. 10, MAC cross-divisional game against the Miami RedHawks.
