YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University women's basketball team fell behind early and could not make up enough ground in a 79-63 loss to a visiting Miami University squad here in the Convocation Center Wednesday, Feb. 10, in a Mid-American Conference cross-divisional game.
Miami scored the first six points of the game and built its lead to as many as 16, before posting the 16-point win.
The loss leaves the Eagles with a 17-6 overall record and a 7-4 MAC mark. Miami improves to 7-17 overall and 5-6 in league play.
Sophomore guard Tavelyn James (Detroit, Mich.-Mumford), led the Eagles in scoring with 21 while junior guard Cassie Schrock (Wadsworth, Ohio-Wadsworth) scored 12 as the only two Eagles in double figures.
Sophomore center Rachael Hencke led the RedHawks with 20 points while sophomore guard Maggie Boyer scored 15, freshman forward Kirsten Olowinski added 13, and freshman guard Courtney Osborn scored 12.
Eastern made just 30.6 percent of its field goals (22-of-72) and shot just 27.3 percent (6-of-22) from beyond the arc. Miami on the other hand shot 45.8 percent from the field, hitting 27-of-59 shots, and also connected on 8-of-19 three-point shots for 42.1 percent. The RedHawks were even hotter from the free throw line, making 17-of-19 for 89.5 percent. Miami also held a 46-40 rebound edge.
Miami came out of the gate on fire, hitting its first three shots, including two triples, but James was also on top of her game, scoring the Eagles' first seven consecutive points as the Redhawks held a 10-7 lead at the 16:46 mark.
Miami would continue to live on the three-point shot, cruising to a 26-15, lead with 11:02 left by hitting 5-of-8 triples in the first nine minutes.
The visitors would go on to build a 15-point halftime lead, hitting 17-of-35 field goal attempts (48.6 percent) and 7-of-12 triples (58.3 percent) while holding the home squad to 32 percent from the field on 11-of-34 attempts.
James paced the Eagles with 13 points in the first half while Boyer had 11 and Hencke 10.
Eastern used its speed to run off six straight points, the last four by James, to cut Miami's big lead to nine, 47-38, before the RedHawks were forced to call a time out to regroup.
Miami used the timeout to its advantage, however, moving it back to double digits at 51-40 with 15:15 left in the game.
The closest the Eagles would get from that point would be nine, 56-47, when Schrock hit a layup with 12:11 remaining.
The Eagles will now hit the road for a Saturday, Feb. 13, MAC West Division game at Ball State.
