YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University gymnastics team will take a break from Mid-American Conference action for the next two weeks, as the Eagles head to Stanford, Calif. to compete against a few of the nation's top teams in the Stanford Invitational Sunday, Feb. 28. EMU will take on the No. 6 ranked Stanford Cardinal, the University of North Carolina Tar Heels and the University of California Bears. The competition is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. (PST) inside the Maples Pavilion.
After competing at Stanford, the Eagles head north to compete in the University of California-Davis Invitational, March 5, against UC-Davis and Sacramento State University.
LOOKING BACK: In their last competition, the Eagles fell to a hot Bowling Green State University currently riding a five-match winning streak, 193.175-191.875, inside Anderson Arena on the campus of BGSU. The Eagles were led by true freshman Kaylyn Millick (Washington, Pa.-Trinity), who tallied the second highest all-around mark of the competition (38.700), which included a meet and career-high 9.775 score on the balance beam.
AWARD WINNING EAGLE: Senior Erin Grigg (North Bay, Ontario-Widdifield) was named the Mid-American Conference Gymnast of the Week after leading the Eagles to a home victory over Western Michigan University, Feb. 13. It marks Grigg's first MAC Gymnast of the Week award in her four-year career and her fourth overall league accolade (MAC Female Scholar Athlete of the Week twice and Academic All-MAC in 2009).
ON THE MARK: Junior Nikole Viltz (Hawthorn Woods, Ill.-Carmel) has been consistent for the Eagles in every competition this season on the vault and balance beam, including a 9.775 mark on the balance beam last week against BGSU, tying her with Grigg for second place. Viltz also carded a 9.600 on the balance beam to finish sixth.
BEAMING WITH CONFIDENCE: Sophomore Tracie Tamashiro (Honolulu, Hawaii-Kalani) carded a career-best mark 9.675 on the apparatus to finish third behind Millick and the Falcons' Breanne Guy last week on the balance beam against BGSU.
SO FAR, SO GOOD: In five meets this season, the Eagles are averaging over 190 points per-competition. The team's highest score so far this season came last week against Bowling Green when the Eagles posted a 191.875 in a loss to the Falcons. EMU's 188.200 score in the victory against WMU, Feb. 13, marks the Eagles' lowest output of the season.
HOME SWEET HOME: The Eagles compete at home just one more time this season, as they host the Eagle Invitational, March 13, for Parent and Alumni Day at Bowen Field House. EMU will compete against Northern Illinois, Western Michigan and Seattle Pacific.
MAC CHAMPIONSHIP HEADS TO "THE HOUSE THAT ROARS": The 2010 Mid-American Conference Gymnastics Championship will take place March 27 at Anderson Arena in Bowling Green, Ohio. It will mark EMU's second trip to Anderson Arena this season, as the team dropped a Feb. 21 contest to the Falcons inside the House that Roars.
