YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) — The Eastern Michigan University women's basketball team could not overcome an awful first-half shooting exhibition as the Eagles dropped a 68-44 non-conference decision to the nationally ranked University of Wisconsin-Green Bay women's squad here Monday night, Dec. 6, in the Convocation Center.
Eastern made just 14.7 percent of their shots from the field in the first 20 minutes to fall behind 40-14 at the half to the Phoenix, who entered the game ranked 21st in the nation with a 7-0 record that included wins over Big Ten Conference powers Penn State, Wisconsin and Minnesota.
Head Coach AnnMarie Gilbert's Eagles managed to rally in the second half, cutting the deficit to 16, 56-40, with 4:54 left, but the Green and White would get no closer in the final stages of the game.
EMU, now 5-4 on the year, had three players in double figures, led by Paige Redditt (Kansas City, Mo.-Belton) with 12 points, Sydney Huntley (Cincinnati, Ohio-Purcell Marian) with 11 and Cassie Schrock (Wadsworth, Ohio-Wadsworth) with 10. Redditt added nine rebounds and Schrock had eight.
EMU's leading scorer, guard Tavelyn James (Detroit, Mich.-Mumford), who entered the game with a 17.8 scoring average, was hampered by an injured right wrist and managed just six points
UWGB, undefeated at 8-0 on the year, also had three players in double figures, led by Julie Wojta with 20 points, Adrian Ritchie with 13 and Kayla Tetschlag with 11.
EMU shot just 25.4 percent from the field for the game, making just 17-of-67 shots while UWGB made 26-of-65 attempts for 40 percent. EMU managed a 49-47 advantage on the boards.
The visitors were first on the board with a pair of free throws by Celeste Hoewisch at the 19:12 mark.
After a nice inside bucket by Redditt tied the game, the Phoenix scored the next four points for a 6-2 advantage after the first four minutes of the contest.
From that point it was all Green Bay, as the visitors out-scored the Eagles, 9-1, to take a 15-3 lead with 12:20 left in the half.
The Phoenix kept the fast-break offense rolling, building the lead to 20, 25-5, after the first 10 minutes of the game.
UWGB would finish the half shooting 47.4 percent from the field, hitting 18-of-38 shots while holding the Eagles to just 14.7 percent (5-of-34). The Eagles hung tough on the boards in the first 20 minutes with 23 rebounds to 28 for the visitors.
The Eagles would start the second half with a surge, out-scoring the Phoenix, 15-9, to cut the lead back to 20, 49-29, at the 12:01 mark.
Eastern also picked up the pace on the defensive end in the first 13 minutes, but poor shooting, especially close to the basket continued to plague the Eagles' attempt at a major comeback.
A full-court pressing defense allowed the Eagles to chip away at the deficit, cutting it to 16, 56-40, on an acrobatic layup by Rogers with 4:54 showing on the clock.
Despite a strong effort over the final four minutes the Eagles would get no closer.
EMU will host the University of Detroit Mercy Wednesday, Dec. 8, in a 6 p.m. doubleheader with the men's team hosting Drake in the second contest.
