YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) — A late-game offensive surge by the University of Detroit Mercy women's basketball team was too much for the Eastern Michigan University women to handle as the Titans shocked the Eagles with a 62-60 win here Wednesday night, Dec. 8, 2010, in a non-conference game in the Convocation Center.

The Eagles held a slim 29-28 halftime lead, and out-scored the visitors, 28-17,in the first 14 minutes of the second half before Detroit went on a 17-3 run in the final 5:45, including hitting four three pointers, to post the two-point victory.

Detroit scored the final six points of the game and a shot at the buzzer by EMU's Tavelyn James (Detroit, Mich.-Mumford) fell short.

The loss drops Eastern to 5-4 on the year while Detroit improves to 4-4.

Eastern was led junior Paige Redditt (Kansas City, Mo.-Belton) with 15 points while James and Cassie Schrock (Wadsworth, Ohio-Wadsworth) added 10 each. Kristin Thomas (Winterpark, Fla.) scored eight points with 10 rebounds for the Eagles who shot 36.9 percent (24-of-65) from the field.

The Eagles jumped on the board quickly, with James hitting the second of two foul shots with just four seconds elapsed in the first half after being fouled on a drive to the basket.

Detroit then ran off eight straight points to take an 8-1 and made it 10-3 before the Eagles slowly crept back into the game, cutting the Titans' advantage to 10-8 on a James layup at the 13:57 mark.

With the visitors holding a seven-point advantage, 28-21, the Eagles came up with eight unanswered points, the final two a jumper by Redditt with just four ticks on the clock to give the home team a 29-28 halftime lead.

Redditt and James both had eight-point efforts while Redditt added four rebounds in the first half. Eastern made just 11-of-35 shots from the field in the first half while Detroit was shooting 46.4 percent, making 13-of-28 field goals while also holding a 23-20 rebound edge.

The visitors quickly took a 32-31 lead in the early stages of the second half before the Eagles cranked up the offense, scoring seven consecutive points for a 38-32 advantage with 16:22 left in the game.

The Eagles would keep the offensive surge going, leading by nine, 51-42, with 8:59 left in the game when Schrock scoring on a driving layup.

Eastern would boost its lead to 12, 57-45, with 6:05 left before the Titans went to the three-point shot, hitting four over the next three minutes during a 14-3 Detroit run that cut Eastern's lead to one, 60-59, with 2:13 left.

A last-second shot by EMU's James slid off the front of the win, giving the visitors the two-point win.
