YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) — The Eastern Michigan University women's basketball team used a tenacious defense and a fast-breaking offense to record a 76-40 win over a visiting Canisius University squad here Saturday afternoon, Dec. 11, in a non-conference game in the Convocation Center.

The Eagles, now 6-5 on the season, forced a whopping 37 turnovers, to go along with 28 steals and three blocked shots while holding the visitors to 24.4 percent from the field (11-of-45).

EMU guards Tavelyn James (Detroit, Mich.-Mumford) and Sydney Huntley (Cincinnati, Ohio-Purcell Marian) led the Eagles with 20 and 11 points, respectively.

Canisius, now 2-6, was led by Jen Moribito with 11 points

The Eagles jumped on the board quickly, scoring the game's first three points when Kristin Thomas (Winterpark, Fla.) scored on a free throw and layup.

The Eagles held the lead throughout the first half, building the advantage to as many as nine, 26-17, with 6:16 left.

Schrock would finish the first half on a positive note, hitting a three pointer with 27.1 left on the clock to make it 30-22 heading into the locker room at halftime.

The Eagles shot 37.5 percent from the field in the first half, making 12-of-32 shots while Canisius connected on 8-of-19 field-goal attempts for 42.1 percent. The EMU defense forced 19 turnovers over the first 20 minutes.

Eastern came out of halftime on fire, racing to a 39-23 lead with 16:48 left in the game.

The Eagles would keep the pressure on both offensively and defensively, increasing their lead to as many 27, 57-30,with just under nine minutes to play and the Green and White would cruise the rest of the way.

Coach AnnMarie Gilbert's Eagles will be idle for 10 days until returning to the Convocation Center to play host to the Temple University Owls, Dec. 21, at 7 p.m.
