YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) -- Senior Cassie Schrock's (Wadsworth,Ohio-Wadsworth) 13 point and career high 16 rebound effort led the Eastern Michigan University women's basketball team to a 65-56 victory over the visiting Temple University Owls, in non-conference action here at the Convocation Center Tuesday, Dec. 21.
The Eagles displayed a balanced scoring attack, as guard Tavelyn James (Detroit, Mich.-Mumford) posted 17 points while Paige Redditt (Kansas City, Mo.-Belton) added 14. Sydney Huntley (Cincinnati, Ohio-Purcell Marian) and Raina Spencer (Cleveland, Ohio-Glenville-Fordham) chipped in with nine and eight points, respectively.
Schrock's rebounding effort was the second highest in Convocation Center history, and also tied for the 15th best rebounding total in school history. It was also the 12th double-double of her career, which ranks fifth among active players in the Mid-American Conference.
With the win, the Eagles advance to 7-5, while the Owls drop to 7-5. The Eagles' win snapped a 12-game losing skid for the league against the Owls dating back to the 2007-08 campaign. As part of Temple's affiliate membership agreement to join the league in football, the basketball team was asked to play each of the MAC's 12 members in a home-and-home contest. TU has recorded a 19-3 record in those contests, only dropping games at Bowling Green (67-86; Nov. 26, 2006), at Miami (53-70; Jan. 2, 2008) and now at EMU.
The Eagles kick-started their offensive attack early in the game, jumping out to a 6-0 lead after a three-point play by Redditt. The Owls responded with an 11-4 run of their own to take a one point advantage, 11-10, at the 12:57 mark.
The Green and White regained control after showcasing shutdown defense during a 9-0 run that was capped off by a three-pointer from Huntley. The Eagles zone defense stymied the Owls, holding them to just 22 first half points on 9-of-31 (29 percent) shots from the field. EMU would go on to close the first half with an additional 5-0 run after steals and scores by Huntley and James, sending the Eagles into the locker room with a 34-22 advantage.
In the second half, Temple found a way around EMU's zone defense to pull the score within four points, 36-32, after starting the half on a 10-2 run. The home team again responded, posting their own 14-2 run to swell the advantage to 50-36 with 10:26 remaining on the clock.
The teams would exchange baskets, but Temple was never able to overcome the deficit, pulling within as close as nine points, but the Eagles survived the Owls late surge secure the 65-56 win.
The Eagles finished the game shooting 19-of-53 from the floor for 36.8 percent, while the Owls finished 24-for-62 for 38.7 percent. EMU held a large advantage from the free throw line as they connected on 25-of-33, while Temple was only 5-of-12 from the charity stripe.
EMU will return to action Thursday, Dec. 23 as they host the University of Illinois-Chicago. Tip off is slated for a 1 p.m. start at the Convocation Center.
