YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com)
– For the second consecutive game, senior guard Cassie Schrock led the Eastern Michigan University women's basketball team to a victory, this time over visiting University of Illinois-Chicago, with an 18-point, eight-rebound performance, to help secure a 74-54 victory against the visiting University of Illinois-Chicago Flames, Thursday afternoon, Dec. 23, at the Convocation Center.

Schrock got to the line early and often for the Eagles, connecting on a career-high 14-of-18 from the free throw line. The Green and White, as a team, hit on 29-of-46 from the charity stripe, while the Flames only managed 13-of-22.

The win propels EMU to 8-5 overall while UIC dips below .500 at 5-6.

Eastern began the game with its patented fast-pace offensive style, streaking to a 9-0 start after scores by Schrock and Sydney Huntley. After increasing the lead to 15-2 with 15:35 remaining, UIC returned the fire, going on a 20-8 run to pull within a point, 23-22.

That would be as close as the Flames would get to the Eagles in the entire game, as Eastern again pushed ahead after Schrock assisted on a Paige Redditt layup.

More free throws by Schrock and a three-point basket by De'Ja Wills saw EMU's lead swell to 13, 42-29, by halftime. Schrock paced the home team with 12 points, five boards and four assists in the opening frame. Tavelyn James and Redditt chipped in with nine points each, while Huntley had seven, three assists and three steals. For UIC, Shameia Green had 13 points to lead the team.

The second half went much like the first for both teams, as Schrock continued to get to the line and the Eagles continued to lay it on the visitors. Redditt hit a turnaround layup six seconds into the frame to push the lead to 15.

The Flames were unable to close the gap to less than 13, 45-32, and the Eagles coasted the rest of the contest. EMU shot 41.5 percent from the field compared to 28.4 percent for the visitors, while turnovers were equal (23 apiece) while the Eagles were outrebounded 48-47.

Freshman Olivia Fouty played solid minutes for the Eagles, notching six points and four rebounds, all in the second half, while Tara Johnson was a force on the boards, grabbing six of them in eight minutes.

Three Eagles finished in double figures as Schrock's 18 led all scorers, James notched 14, and Redditt had 11 on a perfect 5-of-5 from the field. Huntley finished with nine and Wills poured in seven.

EMU will close out the 2010 calendar year with a Dec. 28 contest against the Niagara Purple Eagles. Tip time is scheduled for 7 p.m.
