YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) — Senior guard Cassie Schrock and the Eastern Michigan University women's basketball team capped off the 2010 calendar year with a fourth consecutive victory, 89-34, over Niagara University Tuesday evening, Dec. 28, at the Convocation Center. The 55-point spread marked the fourth-largest margin of victory in Convocation Center history, and the Purple Eagles' 34 total points were the lowest game total for an NCAA Division I team in Convocation Center history.
Schrock (6-of-7) and junior backcourt mate Tavelyn James (6-of-12) each contributed 20 points, with Schrock adding nine boards and seven assists. Sydney Huntley used a big first half en route to a 16-point effort, including a 4-of-9 showing from beyond the arc. Additionally, Olivia Fouty grabbed 11 rebounds for the home team. Chanel Johnson paced the Purple Eagles with seven points.
Niagara surrendered 31 turnovers Tuesday, leading to 40 EMU points. The Green and White outscored its opponent 32-8 in the paint and 13-2 on fast breaks, while shooting 44.9 percent. The Purple Eagles only managed 19.2 percent (10-of-52) from the field.
The Eagles improve to 9-5 on the season and complete a six-game home stand in which they posted a solid 4-2 record. The Purple Eagles fall to 1-10 on the year.
Eastern Michigan took advantage of five Niagara turnovers in the early going, hitting a pair of three-pointers by James early on to build a 15-2 edge with 15:36 to play in the opening half. That lead grew to 29 points by halftime, 50-21, as Sydney Huntley led all scorers with 14 points (4-of-8) at the break.
In the opening frame, the goal percentage was tilted heavily in favor of the home team as the Eagles shot 53.6 percent (15-of-28) from the field while Niagara sank just 29.2 percent (7-of-24) of its attempts. The 50-point first half was good for the most points by the Eagles in any half this season.
EMU's dominance over the Purple Eagles continued into the second half, where the Eagles outscored Niagara, 39-13, marking the fifth-fewest points allowed by an EMU team since the Convocation Center's inception in the 1998-99 season. EMU allowed only three made field goals by the visitors in the final three minutes, and held Niagara without a make from beyond the arc (0-of-6 for the game).
The Eagles kick-off Mid-American Conference action Wednesday, Jan. 5, with a road matchup against Northern Illinois University. Tip-off is slated for 7 p.m.
