DEKALB, Ill. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University women's basketball team opened the Mid-American Conference season with a dominating, 79-63, road victory over the Huskies of Northern Illinois University at the Convocation Center Wednesday, Jan. 5.

With the win, EMU extends its win streak to five games and moves to 10-5 on the season, 1-0 in MAC play. Northern Illinois falls to 6-8 with the loss, 0-1 in MAC action.

The Eagles got out to a fast start with a 13-point lead early in the first half and ended on an even better note by outscoring the Huskies 40-35 in the second half. Despite shooting just 36 percent (22-of-61) from the field for the game, EMU was an impressive 12-for-23 (52.2 percent) from the three-point line.

Junior Tavelyn James and senior Cassie Schrock led the Green and White, each scoring over the 20-point plateau with James recording a game-high 26 points, on 9-of-24 shooting and 6-of-11 from long range, and Schrock close behind with 24 on 5-of-10 shooting and 12-of-12 from the free throw line.

Meanwhile, Paige Redditt added her first double-double of the season by tallying 11 points and 10 rebounds including a 7-for-10 effort from the charity stripe. NIU's Ebony Ellis turned in 18 points, leading three Huskies in double figures and also added a team-high seven rebounds.

EMU surrendered a 7-0 run out of the gates to start the second half, forcing Head Coach AnnMarie Gilbert to call a timeout before the first media break. It proved to be effective as Tavelyn James picked up right where she left off in the first half, hitting a pair of three-pointers to put an end to the Husky run and balloon the Eagle lead back to 10 points at 45-35 with 15 minutes left in regulation.

Late in the second half, Schrock went on a five-point run of her own, capping it with a three-pointer at the top of the key to push the Eagle lead to a game-high 16 points at 66-51. The Eagles would lead by as many as 18 points before cruising to the commanding conference opening win.

With 9:34 left in the first half, Schrock hit the first of her two three-pointers to put the Eagles up 24-11. It capped an 11-0 run for the Eagles and continued a trend from beyond the arc that would befriend them all night long.

EMU continued to sustain its comfortable lead for the remainder of the first half, going 7-for-12 from three-point range despite an 11-for-32 (34.4 percent) shooting performance overall. The Eagles also dominated the boards 26-10 with 15 coming on the offensive glass to the tune of seven first half second chance points.

James' three-point buzzer beater to end the half gave the Green and White a 39-28 edge at the break. She led all scorers with 16 first half points while Schrock added seven and Wills tallied six. Paige Redditt and Kristin Thomas combined for 14 rebounds (10 offensive) with Thomas leading all rebounders with eight at the half.

The Eagles went on to out-rebound NIU, 42-28, with 19 of those coming on the offensive end. They look to keep the momentum alive as they host MAC West foe Ball State in a 2 p.m. start Saturday, Jan. 8, at the EMU Convocation Center.
